The question here is will Orange Is The New Black make a big impact now that its competing as a drama. Favorite Uzo Aduba is definitely in the running, but Lorraine Toussaint should also be considered a strong contender. Also, Laverne Cox can’t be counted out, even if her character was marginalized a bit in Season 2. She gets a ton of press, and the added push for her to “break new ground” puts her as one to watch in the race. Other OITNBers, Kate Mulgrew, Yael Stone, Danielle Brooks, Dascha Polanco, and Samira Wiley all suffer from everyone being so amazing that they’re cancelling each other out.
Of course, Maggie Smith for Downton Abbey is a foregone conclusion, and Joanne Froggatt is still in the mix. Christina Hendricks and January Jones are hoping for final nominations for Mad Men. Christine Baranski is a constant contender for The Good Wife, and Archie Panjabi is a long shot this year. Baranski might also lose her spot because of OITNB’s inclusion in the race. Lena Headey certainly had a strong season on Game Of Thrones. Voters could also go with Emilia Clarke, Maisie Williams, or Sophie Turner. The women really gave their all this season, and someone deserves to break through.
From Bloodline, Sissy Spacek is a contender. Scandal’s Bellamy Young is a longshot. Carrie Coon is also a longshot for The Leftovers, as is Ann Dowd.
Personally, I’m rooting for Jada Pinkett Smith, who gave me life this season on Gotham. Also, Melissa McBride is perpetually overlooked for The Walking Dead, despite giving a killer performance. I’d also throw Danai Gurira, Lauren Cohan, and Sonequa Martin Green into the mix.
Also worth mentioning, but really really longshots for a nomination: Kelly MacDonald for Boardwalk Empire, Maura Tierney for The Affair, Caitlin Fitzgerald for Masters of Sex, Monica Potter for Parenthood, and Kim Dickens and Molly Parker from House Of Cards.
I’d also like to tip my hat to Liza Weil for How To Get Away With Murder, even though virtually no one is talking about her.
My personal nominees would be: Lorraine Toussaint, Kate Mulgrew, Lena Headey, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Melissa McBride, with me writing Samira Wiley’s name on as an additional 6th nominee. Even then, I’d be leaving off Weil, Aduba, Turner, and Stone, all of which did Emmy worthy turns this season.
I think Emmy voters are going to have an incredibly hard time. I’m going to be that at least two OITNBers get nominations (probably Toussaint and Mulgrew), alongside Maggie Smith, one of the Mad Men girls, and Sissy Spacek or Christine Baranski. I don’t think Emmy voters have the balls to nominate The Walking Dead or Game of Thrones in this category. That’s right bitches. I’m calling you out.
