Big Game

Starring: Samuel L. Jackson, Onni Tommila, Ray Stevenson, Victor Garber, Felicity Huffman, Jim Broadbent, Ted Levine
Directed By: Jalmeri Helander

First off, you can’t take Big Game seriously. If you do, then you’ll be disappointed. This is a little like walking into Snakes On A Plane. You need to realize that you’re about to watch a film where Samuel L. Jackson plays the President… who is jettisoned from Air Force One into the forests of Finland, and rescued by a finnish preteen on a vision quest, who are then tracked down by terrorists looking to finish the job they started.

Yes. That’s the plot in a nutshell.

For what its worth, the entire cast is “game”, and that’s what makes the film enjoyable. Everyone knows they’re making a cheesy action flick, and they commit to it with the fullest possible commitment levels possible. Jackson is great, Stevenson is great, Broadbent is deliciously loopy, and Huffman is essentially wasted but good. Tommila gives a good breakthrough performance, but I doubt we see him again. Not a big demand for finnish child actors in Hollywood.

Yes, there are a ton of action movies out this summer, but Big Game is worth your attention. If you happen to be in an area that has it, check it out. If not, well… it’s not reinventing the wheel, so I’m sure redbox will have it soon. Fun, silly, not amazing but worth your time. Just remember… don’t take it too seriously.
