By this point, many have already seen the original 2001 film Wet Hot American Summer. Summer managed to be the best film adaption to for an alternative comedy show. The only difference is that there was no original television show which the movie was based upon, when it was first released, it wasn’t entirely successful and went on to becoming a cult classic. This Netflix original series manages to fill the void by retroactively creating the series which the movie was based upon. The new series is a prequel to the movie and feels like the kind of hip comedy program which would have been perfectly at home in the nineties on MTV or Comedy Central. Netflix managed to do something that is almost unheard of in the current climate of programing, they managed to bring back all of the key cast who now happen to be massive celebrities. Dedication like that shows that these individuals obviously had just as much fun making it as it is to watch. For those who don’t know much about “Summer”, it’s essentially a parody of summer camp movies from the late 70’s early 80’s. The program is extremely tongue in cheek to such an extent that the teenage counselors are played by adults, a satire of how Hollywood tends to cast older individuals as teens. I don’t want to divulge too much about the cast or the details because those are parts of the perpetual jokes that Summer continues to throw at the viewer. Much like the original movie, the series is riddled with guest stars which are guaranteed to bring a smile. If you haven’t seen Wet Hot American Summer, do yourself a favor and check out the series and the film as soon as possible.
