Coming Next Season? A Brief Look At Shows You Might See Soon (part 1)

The Aaron McGruder Projects (Adult Swim/Cartoon Network)- Aaron McGruder (The Boondocks) inked a deal with Adult Swim to develop two new shows for the network. One of them is a 15 minute project, while the other is a half hour project. Both have been ordered to pilot, but given McGruder’s past success, I’m positive at least one (if not both) will get a series order. Interestingly though, the projects are both live-action.

The After (Amazon)- Amazon is heading into the drama field with an ambitious project from X-Files creator Chris Carter. An interesting cast, including Adrian Pasdar, Aldis Hodge, Arielle Kebbel, Jamie Kennedy, and Sharon Lawrence has been assembled. The show follows eight strangers who are mysteriously thrown together and must rely on each other to survive.

Agent Carter (ABC)- Should ABC decide to go with more Marvel programming, they might go with this show starring Hayley Atwell’s character from the Captain America franchise. It’s not a sure fire bet right now, as it is still only in the script phase, and has not received a pilot order. In other words, this may never see the light of day, but is still a very interesting project.

American Psycho (FX)- FX is already working on Fargo, so naturally they have lined up American Psycho as their second film-to-TV show. This show only has a script order, so it is in very early stages. I’m not even sure how this material would translate to the small screen, as it is very controversial and violent. Even on cable, it would still have to be watered down.

The Arrangement (USA)- Based on the Elmore Leonard anthology “When The Women Come Out To Dance”, The Arrangement has landed some good series regulars in Aisha Hinds, Bryan Greenberg, and Stephen Root. The producers of the show have already gotten Suits and White Collar on the net, so it’s a pretty safe bet you’ll see this show at some point.

Atlantis (FOX)- It’s a sci-fi series about two brothers looking for the lost city of Atlantis. It is only in the script phase, but this sounds like it could fit in well with FOX’s current lineup of shows. Specifically, Almost Human.

Babylon Fields (NBC)- I would have written this off as a knock-off of ABC’s upcoming The Returned, but this comes from Michael Cuesta (Homeland),  so you still have to bring it up. NBC is probably dying to have Cuesta’s next series. This is only in the script stage, but I can’t believe Cuesta can’t get a pilot order. Interestingly, Cuesta tried to get this show going in 2007 on CBS, but they passed. That was before Homeland.

Ballers (HBO)- HBO landed a comedy pilot about athletes starring Dwayne Johnson. This would seem like a sure-fire series order, but I guess they’re waiting to see if the pilot is any good. Troy Garity and Omar Miller support. Mark Wahlberg (Entourage) is producing.

Battle Creek (CBS)- CBS has given a blind series commitment to the next David Shore (House). Vince Gilligan (Breaking Bad) series. There’s no cast, but when those two team up to create a series, you pick it up. It’s about two detectives who team up to clean up the mean streets of Battle Creek, MI.

Benched (USA)- USA gave a pilot presentation order to Benched, starring Eliza Coupe (Happy Endings). USA has been trying to get more in the half hour comedy game, and Eliza Coupe is a good star to go with for a series.

Beta (ABC)- ABC got the rights to a young-adult novel series, from author Rachel Cohn. The plot is based around a world where clones have been created and have become enslaved workers for rich people. It’s not quite on ABC’s brand, and sounds like something FOX would order (or perhaps NBC which is brandless right now). Paul and Chris Weitz are EP’s.

Better Call Saul (AMC)- This pilot is still in the works, as a spinoff to Breaking Bad. I think AMC will probably abandon this, but it is worth mentioning.

Bigfoot (FX)- An animated comedy about Bigfoot, from producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

Billy The Kid (FOX)- Westerns on TV are a notoriously tough sell. Most of them don’t get picked up to series. Yes, they were a big part of our TV past, but more recently, we haven’t seen them on the small screen. This show, however, is being billed as an “event series” about the life of Billy The Kid, and comes from executive producers Tom Fontana and Barry Levinson (Homicide, Oz). So, if any western makes next fall’s lineup, it’ll be this.

Black-ish (ABC)- ABC has a sitcom starring Anthony Anderson in the pipeline. Anderson has starred in a few sitcoms (and one drama) already, all of them have failed. There aren’t any black sitcoms on network TV right now (in case you haven’t noticed). ABC might want to tap into an underserved market (by anyone who isn’t Tyler Perry).

Blood Brothers (FOX)– It’s a Civil War drama, which could be interesting. It is only in the script stage, and has no cast, or major producers attached. Even though the concept is solid, it might never get a series order because the EP’s are so green.

Breathless (PBS)- PBS rarely orders new series on their own, so it is interesting that they would order a 60’s medical drama starring Jack Davenport (Smash). Color me intrigued.
