ABC Family has opted to not go forward with a second season of Ravenswood, the Pretty Little Liars spinoff that launched in October. Ravenswood initially launched to an OK 2.1 million viewers, but lost a chunk of that when it returned for the second half of its first season in January, hitting 1.7 million following Pretty Little Liars (which brought in 3.2 million).
Some of this decision probably has to do with a change in the guard at ABC Family. A new programming chief has been brought in, and Ravenswood was part of the “old guard”. It was a series given a “straight to series” order by the past president, so it really needed to hit in order to stay alive with the “new guard”, who is looking to develop their own series and make a name for themselves.
This doesn’t mean all series are in danger. It’s a lot easier to axe a freshman show than a long-running show like Pretty Little Liars, or a new, very visible hit like The Fosters.
