The Too Much TV Roundup- 08/20/23

Heads up. Asoka drops tomorrow night at 9PM on Disney Plus. Weird time, I know, and that is EST. They moved up the premiere by a few hours. Why? Who knows.

8) Chip and Dale’s Rescue Rangers (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Something is up with Dale. Perhaps it’s that alien we saw at the top of the episode. Third episode in and the Rangers are already fighting extraterrestrial life. It’s be cooler if this had audio description.

Episode Grade: B

7) How To Become A Cult Leader (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Limited?

This calls itself a darkly satirical look, which makes me question what is reality, which isn’t good. I feel like this is probably true, but I don’t know enough about Charles Manson, who is featured in the first episode. What i do know seems to track. Peter Dinklage is a great choice of narrator. I’m just confused as to how this is satire.

Episode Grade: B

6) The Summer I Turned pretty (Amazon)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed

Season 1 was OK. As far as the melodramatic streaming shows go, some work for me, some don’t. This was borderline. I thought the show was doing mostly a nice job of coming back from Season 1, considering where things left off, but apparently no one in this show knows anything or cares about mental health. They all just pile on Billie for being depressed, and none of the characters seem to have any idea what a therapist is. The best example of this toxic look at depression is the guidance counselor admonishing Billie for having a less than stellar school year. So bad she went from Ivy League potential, to “Have you ever heard of this college?” Aren’t Guidance Counselors supposed to be good at this stuff? This was an incredibly frustrated episode. I thought about dropping it down one grade, but the fact that Taylor thought I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing was an original song written for her made me laugh out loud. So, Taylor saved this episode from being dead last.

Episode Grade: B

5) Seaquest DSV (Peacock)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Darwin is mysteriously ill, and even a specialist can’t figure out why. So, in the third episode of the show, while we wait for the talking dolphin to die, we get lectures on marine health. Oh, and spoiler alert, the talking dolphin doesn’t die in the third fucking episode.

Episode Grade: B+

4) Smash (Roku)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

I hate how Derek comes in at the end, after being the one to push to fire ivy, to try and be that boyfriend role for her. Gross. So gross. Derek is one of the best TV villains you forgot were villains. It’s possibly my least favorite episode, because everyone is at odds, no major songs are sung, and everyone except Christian Borle seems to be an ass. I know it all works out eventually, but damn. Hearing Ivy sing that little bit of Let Me Be Your Star at the end is soul crushing.

Episode Grade: B+

3) Chucky (Peacock)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Third Season Starts in October

I’m trying to get caught up before Season 3. Damn. Everyone in this awfully named town is apparently an ass. Some truly awful people live here, which is great for Chucky. The voice work on him is good. The first death is silly and creative. It’s interesting to see a gay male lead, though NO ONE in this show sounds like they are the age they say they are. 14 my ass. Seriously, how old is that kid? 21? They have them in middle school.

Episode Grade: A-

2) Harley Quinn (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

Harley is part of the Bat family now, and ivy is heading the newer, more environmentally aware Legion Of Doom. This should complicate their relationship. Biggest criticism about the season premiere? not enough Bane!

Episode Grade: A-

1) This Fool (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

One of the best audio described sitcoms on air. I love how they voice and translate the Spanish. This whole episode is basically about a rooster that crows all the time, and is disturbing the whole neighborhood. If you have never checked this show out, it’s worth your time.

Episode Grade: A-
