Believe it or not, this is an Oscar nominated film, which helped me on my journey to try and review an Oscar nominee I never watched before off all my streaming services. This was on FreeVee. I can honestly say, I’ve met people who *this* is their favorite film. I never quite understood that, but I’ve always been intrigued. Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour in a time travel romance. what could go wrong?
Well, honestly, I don’t really know, because there’s no audio description. However, the plot is silly. Reeve plays a man who falls in love with a woman in a picture, and then visits an old professor to ask about time travel, and basically he’s just told he can will himself into the past. It’s a little like pulling a reverse Dorothy, but instead of There’s No Place Like Home, Reeve is more “There’s No Woman Like Jane Seymour”, until he’s transported through time to her.
This is a film. I suppose it is no more preposterous than building a time traveling DeLorean. But, from there, it’s just a fish out of water period romance. Kate and leopold, if Kate went to leopold at the beginning. I did like the score, and I’m sure this movie has some nice costumes and set. Reeve is fine, he’s just given a silly film, and Jane Seymour does her part to be an object of desire. I mean, she’s wanted by men for her looks. It’s the 80’s.
But, without audio description, scenes without dialogue have no purpose. I had no idea what this picture looked like that Reeve worshiped, nor am I getting any information about all that excellent production and costume design once the time travel has been made. So, predictably, this is headed where most films without audio description go on my site.
Final Grade: unwatchable
