Disney waited patiently for me to finish the first season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians (Disney Plus) before renewing the show for a second season. You know what’s amazing? The total lack of representation. It’s amazing how the shitty character descriptions in this have removed race for blind people. Lance Reddick, a black man, (also, rest in peace), played Zeus in the final episode, and he’s just referred to as wearing a suit and being bald. You know, sighted people can see representation right? Little kids of color can see themselves represented on screen, but when you have audio description that pretends race doesn’t exist, blind kids of color get left behind. They are acutely aware of who they are as a person, even without sight, and being able to relate to characters on screen is rewarding for sighted kids, so why not for blind kids? If this wasn’t true, Sesame Street wouldn’t have a puppet for every possible child out there. Representation matters, dammit.
I’m deeply invested in Criminal Record (Apple Plus). I’d put it maybe as having the honor of being currently the show I’m watching that I’m most obsessed with that is not a reality show (The Traitors). So, if you aren’t watching Criminal Record, I know it’s a boring title, and the cast may not wow you, but it’s solid even when predictable.
True Detective: Night Country (MAX) is approaching Criminal Record. It’s probably either 2nd or 3rd on my obsession list of scripted series. Episode 4 has the most haunting fucking cover of Twist And Shout that plays in the credits at the end I’ve ever heard. Someone took a song I assumed would be impossible to make scary, and made it bone chilling. Episode 4, stay for the credits.
Solar Opposites (Hulu) returned this week with a Valentine’s special, which was delightful. I love how they often are very aware of the audio description, and sometimes have the AD writer looped in like he’s a part of the whole presentation. It’s not disruptive, it just perfectly represents how artistically, everyone could be handling accessibility. It’s like you could build a boring wheelchair ramp, or you could build one with some flair that matches the personality of your building and business, but is still just as functional and accessible, and Solar Opposites chooses the latter option. Consistently great audio description.
I did also watch an older episode of Young Sheldon (MAX) from Season 2. I thought with the strike, I might catch up in time, but now it’s looking more like I might catch up in time for the potential Georgie spinoff.
