The Small Screen Diaries- 02/28/24

I did happen to see an encouraging statement from one of the stars of Criminal Record (Apple Plus) that was confident a second season was happening, which is great because I just finished the first, and for a very predictable series, it was surprisingly well done. The acting is excellent, the audio description is terrific, and I would fully watch with anticipation a second season.

I do not get One Day (Netflix). I don’t like this couple I’m supposed to like. This lead guy is annoying. I don’t hate the audio description, though I’ve seen some grumbling about it online. I notice from more congenitally blind people that they like less interpretation done in terms of reasons behind facial expressions, and just more straight information. Let the viewer make up their mind. While that is a totally valid point, I will say that there’s so much we are missing, still, even with excellent audio description that sighted people have access to that the more immersive and descriptive a track can be, I generally appreciate it. Every project is different, and for me, this audio description track isn’t bothering me much, but also isn’t exceptional. Kinda like the show itself. I’m supposed to watch 14 episodes of this? My prediction is that I won’t.

As an example, I decided after the fourth episode of Ex-Pats (Amazon), that it’s not me, it’s you. I just can’t get into this show. At times, it has these brief moments of greatness, but it wanders, and kinda squanders its potential. I just am not enthused. I left Emma Stone’s series after 4 episodes, so i gave Nicole Kidman 4 episodes to wow me, and this just doesn’t do it. I’m sure people like it, it might even get an Emmy nomination for something. It just feels messy to me.

I did knock out an episodes of The Equalizer (Paramount Plus), which featured the gang trying to track down some street racers who did a hit and run, only to get caught up in an Embassy type scandal. This episode becomes something different surprisingly fast… and furious.

I wish I could come on here and talk about this week’s episode of The Good Doctor (Hulu), but sadly Hulu couldn’t be bothered to upload the audio description at the time I watched this on their service. Maybe it will be added later. #fail.

I also watched an old episode of Community (Netflix) that does have audio description, and I remember this bonkers episode where Greendale had a class on a boat that was in the parking lot. I can’t wait for the movie. It’ll be great.

Say Something!
