I shall mention this, only because of the context. Recently, in an update, the Audio Description Project (AFP.acb.org), added American Idol as having audio description on ABC. So, now the work becomes getting that audio description to travel to Hulu for anyone who doesn’t watch the show live. It has taken them this long, but there is now audio description on Idol, apparently only if you watch live. I watched this on Hulu, without, so there’s your status update.
What did have audio description was The Completely Made Up Adventures Of Dick Turpin (Apple Plus), which is one of the brightest spots this year, and a fun new discovery. I’m loving this show, Tansy Alexander’s audio description is also great. This episode had Dick and his gang dealing with a witch, and Dick got turned into many different things. It was such a fun and quirky episode. The humor is so random. Everyone knows hags hate hummus right? Top tier AD.
I’m still working through Avatar: The Last Airbender (Netflix), and while I think the audio description does a sufficient job, it’s hard to listen to this and not expect more, or feel like some things are being missed. It’s just a fantasy series that has such a strong IP brand recognition. However, in comparison to another major title that was in a similar boat from earlier this year, the Disney plus Percy Jackson and the Olympians, it is far surpassing that in terms of bringing us into the world. I think it’s fine, but I also think there could be more. Middle/Top tier.
The Girls On the Bus (MAX) is starting to find some fitting by the fourth episode. There were some interactions I liked, characters are starting to get fleshed out, and the show is moving away from the political angle, and going more for an ensemble female drama/comedy. For example, everything Carla Gugino’s character went through kind of in the background with her daughter. But also, the interaction where someone makes a good point about being willing to make fun of someone behind their back, but not to their face. The audio description here is fine. Middle tier.
Renegade Nell (Disney plus) continued with some mostly solid audio description. The plot continues to advance forward, and I’m liking how this show is shaping up. I don’t quite get the sister that’s on the “bad guy’ side, who knows her brother killed her father. Her brother is a twat, and I don’t know why she wouldn’t want to get him out of the way. Middle tier.
I also caught up on another episode of The Man In The high Castle (Amazon), which seems to have some really strong audio description from back in the day. Top tier. Overall, aside from the programs I watched that had no AD, this was a pretty good day for audio description.
