The Small Screen Diaries- 04/10/24

Constellation (Apple Plus) basically revealed its bonkers hand. I gotta say for audio description that has to follow two versions of the same person, this does a really good job. Yes, it is kind of that Thing 1 and Thing 2, but if it was good enough for Dr Seuss… Seriously though, Constellation has some really strong description, and I’ve never felt lost in a show that is off the walls. Top Tier.

X-Men 97 (Disney plus) also happened. I don’t quite have the words. I’m having a lot of emotions about this episode. The audio description? You know, I’m all about naming things unless it’s a spoiler. Like, don’t tell me who Keizer Soze is in The usual Suspects. This episode opened up the school a bit more where we saw a few students doing things, and their powers were described, but no one was named. Since we get what is ultimately a cursory glance at them through description, instead of seeing their full image that might match their comic book design, to know who these kids are, names would have been nice. Just saying. I think that was Angel, the version they used in First Class, but it might have also been pixie. Some cameos do get names, like Nightcrawler, Cable, Leech, and Emma Frost. For this episode though, I’ll say Top/Middle tier. Because I don’t know if that was Angel, Pixie, or another mutant with that similar power set.

Will Trent (Hulu) had a fabulous episode, but the audio description can’t capture the fabulousness. All these drag queens, and no mention of their looks. Often, drag queens aren’t just trying to pass as women, and they have these very specific themes that match their vibe. I kinda thought the episode just used drag, and made a statement about it, without actually using the culture, and certainly this audio description didn’t help. Middle/Bottom tier.

Ark: The Animated Series (Paramount Plus) has narration I haven’t been a fan of. I will say that the written script is the best part, but the narrator, and how they really even sound recorded, just comes across as amateurish or like it was someone’s first time. Episode 4 had another colony, this one led by Gladiatrix. Middle/Bottom tier.

The Gentleman (Netflix) has our lead really wanting to get out of the drug business, but he still has some loose ends to tie up first. Maybe Giancarlo Esposito can help? How crazy would that be if this was really his character from Breaking Bad, and these shows linked together? I know that is insane. but… still…. Think about it. I’ll go Middle/Top tier on this. I don’t really have any major concerns with it, but Guy Ritchie joints often have heightened action and dialogue, which make the process more challenging in the end. That boxing match, for example, was described well, but also we’ve had better boxing scenes described before.

I also caught up on another Veep (MAX), and the audio description is trying really hard to break into this dialogue as well. Middle/Top tier.
