I’m so excited to have outer Range (Amazon) back. I’m pretty sure this is Roy Samuelson doing the narration. Amazon tried to push me into episode 2, but I don’t want to rush it. It took two years to get to season two, so it will probably take another two for the next. But I also know I can’t screw around, and Amazon expects me to watch this fast enough so they are encouraged to renew it. But, if you haven’t yet checked out this show that is like if Yellowstone was being written by Chris Carter or Jonathan nolan, then you are missing out. It’s such an excellent show, josh Brolin is so good, but there’s so much lore you have to start at Season 1. No jumping in, the series will make zero sense. However, the nature of this show, with all of its science fiction, time traveling, unanswered questions is well done by Roy. It reminds me a bit of when he did Bo Is Afraid, and there were parts where nothing made sense, and you just have this calm voice guiding you through pure insanity. outer Range isn’t quite that far off the map, but it certainly wouldn’t mind the comparison.
I also started Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show (MAX) which is just like him to deconstruct a genre yet again, and deliver something unexpected. It’s a mix of stand up, with brutal honesty, and him opening up about his life and being openly gay. The show also captures his life in the style of the reality shows we are used to, where cameras just follow selected people around like Kardashians. but he interjects with these little musings. It certainly is interesting. The audio description doesn’t have too much to work with other than facial expressions most of the time due to the format, but it does have it, and that does help when someone shows up in the part of his life that is being filmed and we get a description of who this person is.
The Connors (Hulu) had a nice episode last week that saw Dan finally pay off the house. the season finale is Wednesday, so with next season being the final one, I’m hoping they stick this landing. It was so weird for Katey Sagal to be missing from this episode. I know her deal allows her to miss some episodes, but it was weird that she wasn’t there to pay off the house, and then Dan is headed to New Orleans with Jackie? So weird.
Velma (MAX) had one of its better episodes, where Velma and Fred find out their parents are hooking up, and velma lives this Annie musical moment out. It’s the most creative thing this show has really done. Also, props to the audio description for directly telling us that the image reference was that of Shaggy, assuming that anyone watching this had a cursory knowledge of who that character is and what they look like. I agree. i just don’t know who is watching Velma that has no idea about anything else having to do with Scooby Doo.
I did watch another episode of Good Times (Netflix), and I don’t really know why. At times, it has biting social commentary, but it is so fleeting. It feels less like a show where a bunch of black writers got together of their own accord and wrote a series that represented their culture than it does a bunch of guys who grew up on Family Guy, moved into Adult Swim, started watching Big Mouth, and then were given their own show… called Good Times. This show is far more influenced by the sophomoric humor of adult animation than the series it is named for.
I’m back to trying to finish Ghosts UK (Paramount Plus), which as a reminder, has audio description on the service.
Sugar (Apple Plus) has officially gone off the deep end. I’m so intrigued though. I finally caught up to the twist, but I still don’t fully understand it, and I can’t wait to finish this. Plus, I noticed Apple was billing this as a season finale. Are they planning more? I guess when I get to the finale, I will understand. one thing I had a question about with the description was after he injects himself and starts to make a physical transformation, he sounded like he was getting older, but the audio description just described some of the visuals, and I suppose those could happen without him aging. so I was left with the question of whether or not he was aging or not.
After this episode, I now only have one more So Help Me Todd (Paramount Plus) left. Watching this show, knowing it is cancelled, breaks my heart because this cast works so well together. It is light, fluffy, and I wish someone would save it. Sadly, it works best on CBS, but as Roku looks to continue to expand their brand, saving a series like this, or Not Dead Yet, would give them product people are aware of, while they continue to build original shows. Even their biggest hit, The SPiderwick Chronicles was originally being developed by Disney Plus.
And just for clarification, since I mentioned it in yesterday’s diary, when Saturday Night live was ported to Peacock, it did not have audio description come along. I still finished the episode, but it was a shame.
