The Small Screen Diaries- 05/31/24

I got through another episode of Bodkin (Netflix), which really had an interesting twist for Episode 5 as the characters found themselves telling their individual journeys jumping back in time and working forward to a certain point. They all have information coming in,and things that have been put together, but as one character’s life hangs in the balance at the end, is this getting a little too dangerous for the podcasters? I haven’t raved about a this audio description before now, since it is a tough show to follow with this large ensemble cast of really small supporting players to fill out the town, but I thought how they handled the time jumps was really helpful and kept the episode from getting confusing, which it absolutely could have been without audio description.

Outer Range (Amazon) continued to dive even more into the science fiction and lore of this universe even more than season one. But I gotta say, that father/son moment between Billy and his dad, with the dust, was some truly trippy shit. Well described by Roy Samuelson, as the two end up in this Sistine Chapel painting, but just insane from a narrative structure for the show. I’m really hoping Amazon sticks with this.

I also love Jurassic World: Chaos theory (Netflix), and I really am not ashamed anymore. i will not be shamed into thinking these are cheap cartoon cash grabs. This is a well written show with strong characters. The second episode dives a bit into the past, as we see Brooklyn before her death, but it is mostly Ben and Darius fleeing… something, and trying to help a triceratops before it blows up a gas station.

Jerrod Carmichael’s Reality Show (MAX) seems to be a great way for him to challenge the format and work some things out. I wonder if HBO is going with a second season of this or not.

I also did finish a show today, and it was for good, as I finally sat down for the series finale of So Help Me Todd (Paramount Plus), which clearly was given mixed signals from CBS, because that is one hell of a cliffhanger ending. That’s a show that definitely thought they had done enough to earn a third season, on par with the shocking double down by Quantum Leap just before its cancellation. I’ll miss this show. I know it’s fluff, but fluff is nice sometimes.

Because after fluff, we have Hacks (MAX), which is one of the best written shows out there. This episode kind of centered around colonoscopy, but also really ends up putting them in the race for this late night show. I know this season finale has technically aired, and I’m behind, but I just think life can’t continue to go up and up for these two. I mean, does Seaosn 3 really end with them getting a late night show? I guess I’ll see. Oh, and Ava is now officially single. Ready to mingle? We shall see. U have a prediction…
