The Small Screen Diaries- 06/01/24

Happy Pride Month! Technically, I acknowledged that officially yesterday with my review of The Birdcage, but my Diaries always reflect what I saw the day before. So, what did I watch? Well, I finished Sugar (Apple Plus), which actually ended a little bit in a way I didn’t like. Not that it was bad, I just felt like we were climbing and building, and the odd lore of the series was rising, and then the end happened, and I’m now less excited for the prospect of more Sugar? Oddly, I think a lot of it had to do with him sitting down and listening to the tapes, as I just think there was a more creative way to handle that then exploring the serial killer style violence the show had already side-stepped. I loved this when it was a throwback to the vibe we used to get from watching Bogey in The Maltese Falcon, which was merged so well with modern times. I don’t know. The finale just didn’t quite work for me.

The Big Cigar (Apple Plus) is not very high on Apple’s own list of top series, behind shows that aren’t even currently airing new episodes. Like, I’m happy people are catching up on for All Mankind, but I was surprised to see this below that. So, this was an interesting episode, as paranoia continues to set in, and we see a bit more of the power struggle within the black panther party. I think the Emmys are unlikely to nominate this, but perhaps Andre holland, but I’ve said before his category is stacked.

I watched another episode of A Man In Full (Netflix), and the struggle to try and get the guy out of jail before he is killed for defending himself. This is like watching two TV shows in one, and I am so waiting to see how these two storylines converge again.

I did start with season 1 of We Are Lady parts (Peacock), so it will take me a minute to catch up on this British comedy about a Muslim punk rock girl band, but it definitely has a unique voice. It wasn’t the funniest thing I’d ever seen, but I can see why it has strong buzz and fans. Then again, it took me a few episodes to fully embrace Ted Lasso and The Bear.

I also jumped back in on Invincible (Amazon), which you may remember dropped the second part of season two some time back there, and i actually just hadn’t put that back into my rotation. now it is. The aftermath of the big fight left the group with a member that died, another in a coma, and one that had to have reconstructive surgery. Meanwhile, Mark is dealing with his relationship with Amber. My wish for this show, since I’m supposed to care about Amber more, is to actually spend some more time with her. i know time is all about this superhero stuff, but I feel like she exists more as a thing than a fully realized character. I actually expected her to be gone by now, but since she’s still here, she needs something to do.

I started Geek girl (Netflix) which is smartly launching in the same window that XO kitty blew up in last year, and is going after that same exact audience. It’s about one of those nerdy but secretly hot girls who is shockingly turned into a supermodel. Not a high concept. It is a pleasant enough watch, and I think its target audience will like it. The audio description just needs to remember this show is going to be about fashion, and in alter episodes I just want more of that. Yes, there was some description about the hat, but I felt like a lot was left to be desired in that world.

I’m also happy to discuss that I’m still catching up on 911 (Hulu) which now has audio description on at least older seasons like 5. I’m hoping to be fully caught up by fall for the Season 8 premiere.

And, it’s an old show, but I also have been casually catching up on The Man In The High Castle (Amazon), which feels like an early stage audio description. I’m not a fan of this voice matching with this show. The written narration seems to be OK. I’m having a bit of a hard time following it, but I sometimes also go a few weeks between episodes, and this really isn’t a show to do that with. So that is on me.

Say Something!
