The CW picked up their last remaining vestige of anything that resembles The CW, with All American. So, congrats to anyone who still watches The CW.
I checked out Eric (Netflix), the new Netflix limited series starring Benedict Cumberbatch in a show where if Jim Henson/Fred Roger’s was an asshole and his kid was kidnapped. He spends the time we see in father and son mode basically berating him over his son’s idea of the title character, Eric. Eric is a puppet that the kid has come up with for his dad’s popular kids TV show, and then his son goes missing, and we’re left to wonder why this show is named after the puppet. Gaby Hoffman plays his underdeveloped wife who basically just smokes during the first episode, and worries. There’s a detective who is on the case, but he seems to want to take down this club, and I think the show is set in the 80’s, so the fact that he’s gay and has a partner at home sick in bed isn’t lost on me. Not the worst pilot, but it’s hard to want this asshat of a Dad to be reunited with his kid, but I also don’t want anything bad to happen to the kid. The audio description is fine, if the puppet resembles Sully from Monsters Inc, because that was the vibe I was picking up. Sub out the reddish patches on Sully for Black, and that’s Eric.
Then, Tires (Netflix) had its best episode so far, structured in a way where we got to know the other characters in the store as they all tried to upsell their customers for the day. The pilot for this was awful in comparison to the second two episodes. Start your shows off strong. The audio description came in clutch, describing one of the couples looking for service as East Asian. II would say that they also didn’t call out the white trash couple, except the characters do refer to them as being white trash… so… but the characters also debate about talking to the East Asian couple in Mandarin. So, there’s that.
We got closer to resolution on American Rust (Amazon) as I now have one more episode left. it is so bizarre to me that this show is getting no Emmy attention. Jeff Daniels gives a stronger performance here than in A Man In Full, it’s just that other show is more obvious acting with that heavy accent. This is far more nuanced.
I finished The Sympathizer (MAX), which as a reminder, i appear to be the only person who didn’t like this show. But I love Robert Downey jr. he was in this POS till the end.it’s gonna get Emmy love, and I really will be thinking about all the great work done this year that didn’t have RDJ and therefore no one watched to nominate it.
And I’m another episode close to the season finale of Elsabeth (Paramount Plus), as she takes down a woman who has a crime monitoring system that is bullshit, and she’s found out. Good. I’m hoping Carrie Preston pulls out an Emmy nomination here. They loved her when she was a guest actress on other shows, now that she’s doing her own thing… can she get the nomination?
in the world of older shows I watched that had audio description… shoutout to Family Matters (MAX).
