Talking Emmys: Best Supporting Actor In A Drama

Now, I might be a little optimistic here, but I think there’s a chance that we aren’t going to get only two shows in this category, with four nominations each like last year. That being said, it should be obvious that no nominee from last year is eligible in this category. Since this isn’t really about who I’d like to see, let’s break down who exactly is taking these spots.

1) Jon Hamm (The Morning Show)

Very likely to be a double nominee this year, with his performance in Fargo certain to land him in the Limited Series category, Ham was a strong new addition and really helped season 3 shine. I still don’t know how they landed him, because he seems so busy, but since they did, he’ll likely to get rewarded with a nomination.

2) Bill crudup (The Morning Show)

I also think Emmy voters will continue to reward Crudup with a nomination. He’s been previously nominated in this category for his role, and Idon’t think that changes, especially with the elimination of Succession, and a lot of other potential returnees not able to qualify.

3) Salim Daw (The Crown)

Playing the manipulative father to the ill-fated Dodi, this performance has gottten more critical praise than I thought it would. He’s kind of a one note villain, but he seems to be tracking with everyone, and The Crown is a veteran drama in its final season. Plus, this character wasn’t around in Season 5 to be nominated, so it’s untested waters.

4) Khalid Abdalla (The Crown)

And right along with him is likely to be the man who plays that ill-fated son, rounding out The Crown’s contributions to the category.

5) Nathan Lane (The Guilded Age)

Trying to figure out who out of this massive ensemble will actually make it to the nomination is hard, but Lane’s acting is so impressive and so on point, it makes it hard to not pick him. I think at least Lane gets the nomination.

6) Jonathan Pryce (Three Body Problem)

I’m making a bit of a swing here, but I don’t have Three Body in any acting category, but I do have it in show. I think of all the cast, pryce has a shot at a nomination, as his time on the show was impactful, and he’s a well known name who will also be having a FYC campaign for The Crown. With that putting him on everyone’s minds, I think he gets a spot.

Tadanaobu Asano (Shogun)

I’m fighting spell-check hard on this category. I think Shogun likely takes the last two spots, as there are plenty of supporting men who can do it, but much like watching to see which White Lotus cast members get nominated, it is a bit of a crapshoot. I’m giving Shogun two spots, the first to Kashigi.

8) Takeshiro Hira (Shogun)

And, another projection for the second spot for Shogun. If you watched the show, feel free to make your favorite two supporting actor picks, because it might be them.

I’ve seen some other names thrown around, but when I think of Mr and Mrs Smith, I don’t think of supporting actors. If Will Trent makes it in, I don’t think it makes it past Rodriguez, same with Elsabeth and Preston. I can’t see anyone in Slow Horses other than Oldman, or The Curse other than Emma Stone. So who could possibly come in out of nowhere? Honestly, I think the best chance would be for The Guilded Age to pick up a second nomination, possibly for Michael Cerveris?
