Talking Emmys: Best Actor In A Comedy Series

Last year, this category was pretty stacked. it was so stacked that Emmy voters chose not to nominate both of the leads of Only Murders In The Building. This year, Jason Segal is out of competition with no new season of Shrinking, Bill Hader’s Barry is over, Jason Sudekis is out of Ted Lasso, and even nominees like Donald Glover and Atlanta aren’t there to pull votes. So, with the biggest new star studded comedy featuring female leads, can both Murders be in the Building?

1) Jeremy Alan White (The Bear)

The literal most obvious nomination. Signed, sealed, delivered. I’m not even sure he has competition to win. I can’t see a single actor challenging him for the win.

2) Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm)

HBO is gonna come hard in the other categories because they don’t have much in drama. But, they do have multiple comedy contenders, and they have previous nominee Larry David in his final season of Curb. I don’t think he has a shot at winning, but I think a nomination is a forgone conclusion.

3) Martin Short (Only Murders In The Building)

Again, after being the one to actually get the nomination, I’m ranking him higher than Steve this year, since it seems like he pulls a few more votes. Plus, that op-ed about Martin Short not being funny that caused an uproar from his co-stars might still be fresh among voters minds looking to stick it to the naysayers.

4) Steve Martin (Only Murders in The Building)

I do think that this time around, we have the potential to get both men in. Abbott Elementary, Hacks, Palm Royale, Loot, Life After Beth, And Just Like That, and a number of potential contenders lack a male lead. I still don’t buy the Reservation Dogs sudden love in its final season, and What We Do In THe Shadows seems hard to pull acting nominations. Gen V is unlikely to get its late lead actor Chance Perdomo a posthumous nomination, and I just don’t buy The gentleman in this race. I’d be shocked if the Only boys weren’t reunited.

5) Adjani Salimon (Dreaming Whilst Black)

The 5th (and possibly 6th) place spots are tough. While I think my #6 choice is valid, part of me would really love to see Rhys Darby (Our Flag Means Death), Martin Freeman (breeders), or Jake Johnson (Minx) show up. But, Dreaming Whilst Black did get some praise from critics, and Salimon is the lead. What else would showtime be pushing here? It might be hard to get people to remember a show from November, but perhaps this show still has fans.

6) Danny McBride (The Righteous Gemstones)

I think john Goodman would be campaigning in supporting, so if we go to six, I’m predicting a nomination for McBride for The Righteous Gemstones, which i believe (like the Bear and Only Murders In The building) is planning on having a new season during the voting period.I suppose, since he was nominated last year for White Lotus, I shouldn’t totally ignore Theo James for The Gentleman, but I didn’t think that was a comedy. I also thought that was a limited series. But, to my Emmy voters out there, may I throw out one more for your consideration? Greg Kinnear (Shining Veil). I would not have nominated him for the first season, but his work in the second season was exceptional. He stole the second season.

Say Something!
