The Small Screen Diaries- 06/20/24

I would love to know whaat I missed that turned Black Noir into such a chatty Cathy on The Boys (Amazon), because he went three seasons with silence, and now he just pops up. It’s not even like he now oddly says like one word, which could be hilarious. He’s just some dude. But the fourth episode of the season once again belongs to Antony Starr, who was scary as hell as Homelander. The simple phrase”Homelander wouldn’t be happy” is now terrifying. You wouldn’t like him when he’s not happy. I’m also really excited that we likely will see more of Simon Pegg moving forward, mainly because I just realized this season that was Pegg in that role. Firecracker is proving that she was the right choice for what Sage is trying to do, and A-Train continues his attempt to become an actual hero. Or at least, have a peaceful interaction with Huey. The best audio description moment in this episode had to go to all those terrible things Homelander did to the scientists who used to run tests on him. The oven sequence in particular was brutal.

I also reached Episode 8 of Dark Matter (Apple Plus), which earlier when I looked said it only had an 8 episode first season. That might have been the season finale, and if so, flex on brother. That was the most apex finale I’ve seen, where it really felt like everything, and all the consequences, built to this final episode, where we realize that by opening these doors, and creating these realities, how many versions of this guy have been trying to get back to this world.I kinda wish this was getting late stage Emmy attention, but the episodes it would need to get there would be the hanging chad episodes that aired after the consideration period. But, I’m now obsessed, and I would love a second season. Please?

geek Girl (Netflix) really needs to learn important life lessons about hiding secrets from her best friend. Like, this whole show she’s had one friend, and I know she doesn’t want to break Nat’s heart, but you are about to go to Canada. you will have to explain that. Also, props to her dad for stepping up. Again, I feel ancient, as a childless critic who is older that this dude whose daughter just landed a modeling contract.

The wheels are certainly turning on Evil (Paramount Plus) as the gang has to travel to get an artifact, and they have a very unpleasant flight home. Meanwhile, the gaggle of daughters on this show are left home with supervision, but after being attacked by bats… it’s time for Grandma to take over, and she’s already still babysitting. If you get what I mean.

And, in terms of older shows, or older seasons, I’m trying to catch up on Resident Alien (Peacock), which just got a season 4 renewal. I tried doing the first season way back when, and it did not have audio description back then. Now the whole thing does, so I’m investing in a show that has at least one more season to go, that I did genuinely enjoy. Also, a friendly reminder that Family Matters (MAX) has audio description. So, we really can put audio description on older classic TV shows.
