Movies With pride: Ex-Husbands

In continuing my celebration of pride, i took a look at the indie drama Ex-Husbands, which features Griffin Dunne as Peter, a recently separated man of a certain age, who is looking to take a break. His son would also like to take a trip with his friends, before one of them gets married, and they all end up going to the same location. growth and self discovery ensues. Like I mentioned earlier with Layla, I wanted to tackle a few LGBTQ titles that didn’t have audio description, because a lot of queer cinema just doesn’t get the same attention. These films can fly under the radar, and accessibility isn’t on the thought of the producers. However, you can be LGBTQ+ and also blind or low vision, and your tastes might be seeing yourself represented in film a bit more than being relegated to watching Call Me By your Name on repeat.

Despite a supporting cast including Rosanna Arquette, Richard Benjamin, James Norton, Lou Taylor Pucci, and Echo Kellum, this Noah Pritzker couldn’t get the funding I guess. I don’t want to seem too catty here, but I mention the director, because that last name could pay for the audio description alone. Noah is part of the family that is known for being recipients of the profits of Hyatt. Normally, I give indie filmmakers a break. But knowing that he probably owns a suit more expensive than it would have cost to make his film more accessible to a blind and low vision audience, it makes it a bit harder for me to give this indie a pass.

Accessibility just isn’t that expensive. Not for the returns you could get by being one of the few accessible titles. And I do say few, because in all the hours of film shot, the reality is that we have a drop in the bucket compared to having a world where we can watch anything, and not have to worry about our needs being met.

I’m proud. But I can be proud and blind. This film has the financing to pay for audio description.

Rotten: 50/100
