What is It?: The President (Cena) and Prime Minister (Elba) find themselves the target of an overpowered criminal enterprise able to take down Air Force One with them on it. Luckily, they parachute out and become the lone survivors. The world thinks they died, but these contrasting personalities must work together to survive, without contacting for help. They don’t know who to trust, so it’s up to them.
What Works: This movie rides on the charisma of Cena and Elba. It also really hopes it’s been a while since you’ve seen a really dumb action film, and you’re ready for one of the dumbest. This is like when Jean Claude Van Damme teamed up with Dennis Rodman in Double Team. this is Moonfall. This is that movie Jay Leno did with Pat Morita ou forgot existed until now. this is Theodore Rex. the only difference maybe is the scope of the supporting cast, allowing for a broader range of charisma, though this film is nearly entirely on the shoulders of Cena and Elba. Copley is easily in less than 5 minutes of the film. The generally entertaining jack Quaid is maybe in five minutes. Carla Gugino is reduced to nearly non-existence when the script doesn’t directly need the VP. Cena is so used to saying Yes to anything, so he’s at full level of commitment, and somehow so is Elba, though you have to wonder how a guy that had fans lobbying for him to play Bond truly feels about this film. I’m sure he enjoyed the paycheck.
What Doesn’t Work: This is a miserable, deeply flawed, and incredibly stupid film. How the guys that created From made this is beyond me, and how the director of Nobody thought this was good is baffling. The taking of Air Force One doesn’t even make sense. it happens so quickly, and it’s just crazy to have it be that easy. Gary Oldman needed to take notes.
Cena and Elba are saddled with some of the dumbest action sequences. I know I checked out when a helicopter shoots a grappling hook into a safe room, and starts ripping it from the ground so it can carry it off. I’m pretty sure this is impossible.
Or, the running gag about Cena being “gym strong”, which eventually leads to him ripping a statue from the ground and hurling it at a helicopter to save the day.I’m Ok with suspending some disbelief, but at a certain point, I feel like my intelligence is insulted, and you’re trying to lower my IQ.
The supporting cast has some big talent, and i wish the film realized tht and did something with it. Even Chopra-Jonas seems to be here just as a random love interest for Elba, not to actually further the plot. This also has one of those weird AI programs our government has that no one knows about, but takes Stephen Root’s hacker about ten seconds to take over.
the Audio Description: Media Access Group is there for every dumb joke, every overblown action sequence. It’s good audio description, just on a bad film.
Why You might Like it: it is the only movie to watch on the plane for your 18 hour flight, so at some point, you’ll check it out just to fight boredom. Or, you’re a fan of Cena and Elba, and don’t heed warnings.
Why you Won’t Like it: Because it isn’t good.
Final thoughts: Amazon dropped what seemed like a fun action movie with big stars for July 4th,but forgot that fun is a dish best served with coherence.
Rotten: Final Grade: 2.7/10
