What is it?: A filmmaker follows a typical white american savior who may just be the answer to an ancient South American prophecy and destined to bringing the indigenous tribes together and bringing world peace.

Why it Works: This documentary is also produced by Danny McBride, and after sitting through it, I’m convinced he jumped on board because he’s working on adapting this mans life for him to play it in a fictionalized series or film. This story is so unbelievable I hesitate to say much about it, because part of the fun is going on the ride. If you’re like me, the whole premise is insane from conception. how on earth could this guy save the world? But, if you stick with it, it becomes a rather interesting trip through what to believe and what not to believe. Even the director seems to not know what that is.

Regardless of whether he’s a prophet or not, our case study certainly has lived an interesting life. That, and the general tone, make for an easy to take documentary likely thrown into the midst of world on fire documentaries looking for Oscar attention. this is just enjoyable, and hopefully it has decent distribution when it hits in October. Documentaries have a way of easily getting lost.

As far as the lack of audio description, it was a factor, as there is some indigenous language being spoken that I can’t read the subtitles for, though the main guy speaks English. So, barriers exist, and I was taken out of the documentary a little as a result, but the core story is still oddly fascinating. NatGeo had a documentary a while back about a real life figure who tried to bring a bible to a truly indigenous population that had stayed away from society, and that did not work well for him. this is certainly not that.

Why you Might Like it: it is surprisingly engaging, and better than i thought it could be. As a non-believer, it had me questioning things, which is exactly what I should be doing. it entertains and prompts conversation.

Why you Might not Like it: this is a film where the lack of audio description can be a deal breaker if you need it. If it lands on a streaming service you already pay for, the weird trip might still be worth it.

Final thoughts: the man Who saves The world might play like a tall tale, but it also might just be the hero we need right now. As one man seeks to unite and bring peace, another successfully captured all the best parts.
