When you need a man with a very particular set of skills, you’d better call nobody. when you think about the career trajectory for Bob Odenkirk, he has truly had one of the most unique career paths. David Cross certainly hasn’t had the same level of against type performances. Now, after surprising with being an action star in the first film, he’s back because people like money. The first Nobody did OK at the box office, and proved to be a bit more of a charmer on streaming, eventually widening its fan base. I think given some time, this sequel will find some more fans as well. Not as many, but there’s a future in this franchise if they want it.
Nobody goes on the road. after setting a bunch of money on fire in the first film, he’s been working to pay off his debt. But after his son gets into an altercation at school, his wife implores him to do something, and Nobody gets the idea to go on a vacation to a theme park no one has ever heard of. They basically take this franchise from john Wick to Vacation, and it works. Having seen the failed sequels to M3gan and Nobody, I’m convinced the third outings should be Holiday movies. Megan gets Christmas, because her bursting out of a wrapped box is a no brainer, and Nobody gets thanksgiving, so he and his odd ragtag family (featuring RZA and Christopher Lloyd) can meet more members of this likely very unlikely clan. the second film tries to do some small town shenanigans that don’t work, and bring in Sharon Stone to play the big bad. The action set pieces are what works, especially an inspired fight in an arcade, but Stone’s presence brings nothing to the table.
the film does have some pretty excellent audio description, as most action films do, as they are challenged with describing as much of the action as possible. It is a fun film and series still, but there is a noticeable dip in quality as they aren’t quite sure where to go next. technically, i suppose European Vacation came next, but they need to get to a holiday fast. I’m not sure Universal continues either franchise, though neither is expensive to produce. both sequels weren’t as good as the original, though I did still like them.
Bob Odenkirk is pulled back into random acts of violence for your viewing pleasure. it might not be at the same level as the first, but it’s all good man.
