Disclaimer: I’m a blind film critic. As you wish.
It’s a pretty simple movie. Oh, Hi feels like the kind of film that could just keep going further and further off the rails, but it stays pretty much on the first new set of tracks it jumps to. one derailment, and then onward. The question is, will anyone find these characters charming? Will anyone root for these crazy kids? I think more couples will be glad this isn’t them.
Weighing how much to tell in the review, that is the question. Molly Gordon and Logan lerman play a couple on a nice romantic weekend at a cabin in the woods. Everything seems to be going swimmingly. He’s being super romantic, and she’s feeling like he might be the one. But, are the wires crossed? Is this something else?
the turn of events comes as a lesson to men. Make sure you aren’t handcuffed to a bed before making any silly declarations. She’s in love, so when she finds out he’s more of a hit it and quit it person, she feels betrayed. So, she leaves him handcuffed to the bed. After all, if she can just convince him he’s wrong about her…
So, Therein lies the film, as Lerman tries to talk his way out of a situation, and Gordon tries to prove she’s the one, while also basically keeping him hostage. And the comedy of errors continues. I kept expecting this film to go super dark, maybe because I’ve seen Gerald’s game, but it really stays basically in the mixture of dark comedy and quasi-romantic comedy. There are twists, some less believable than others, but mostly I wondered if anyone would relate to this. Or, if anyone cares to see these two work their problems out? That’s the tiny problem with writing a film with questionable leads, is our ability to identify or connect goes a bit out the window.Oh, Hi smartly doesn’t overstay its welcome. There are some interesting turns along the way, and there are more than two people in the cast, but I’m minimizing spoilers. I did feel, considering he’s David Cross, he was really underutilized. But, he does appear here in a miniscule role.
If you like comedies with characters who are nothing like you, you’ll probably get a kick out of Oh, Hi. However, if you must be emotionally invested at all times, I’m not sure there is a winner among the bunch.
