The Small Screen Diaries- 07/11/24

Yesterday was Slurpee day and all I got was The Boys (Amazon) and a Christmas Special? I guess for a show that always runs during a certain time of year, if they want to deal with Christmas, they just have to do it. Hacks had the same problem. So Ryan is filming a cringeworthy special, firecracker is more regarded by Homelander, Sage is back to normal, A-train is ready to get off at this stop, Milk needs to get his family out of town, Butcher is seeing things that aren’t there, Deep is having deep relationship problems with an octopus, … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 07/11/24

The Small Screen Diaries- 07/10/24

The Acolyte (Disney plus) showed us what happened when the Jedi faced off against Space Witches, in what I assume is the thing that we were about to get in Episode 6, but that episode was dedicated to talking about talking. This episode is better as things actually happen, it is by far the most Carrie Anne moss has had to do all season, and now we have a better idea. I’m not sure this show was written by anyone who had ever watched a Star Wars property thing before though. I also watched the first two episodes of the … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 07/10/24

The Small Screen Diaries- 07/09/24

I’m getting closer and closer to the final Sweet Tooth (Netflix). Gus was rescued last episode, by a much older hybrid, and we learn that hybrids have been around longer than most people know. The cave is the secret to saving the human race, which Gus wants to do, and now that he has his mom with him, he might get to do. There’s a knock at the door at the end of the episode, and even though just two seconds later Big Man was with everyone else talking about going out to find Gus, I’ve noticed that despite how … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 07/09/24

The Small Screen Diaries- 07/08/24

It looks like the social media trend that had people turning on audio description for Bridgerton to make it steamier, is now also happening for The Acolyte, as people are watching the most recent episode where Manny Jacinto is shirtless and bathing himself. I’m all for this trend. turning on audio description creates a visible metric to the companies tasked with providing it, and their entire model is about providing things that will make them money and bring in subscribers. So if this really became a thing, I could see a streamer taking full advantage of it by trying to … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 07/08/24

The Small Screen Diaries- 07/07/24

This is going to be so short. I used most of my TV time to knock out the final three episodes of Wandla (Apple Plus), which I do plan on doing a more in depth review of. What I’ll say for sure is that I’m down for Season 2, and I think families will love this. It might be a bit much for little ones, but probably 6-7 on up will enjoy this. Even adults (though, it’s not going to be like your new Bridgerton or something). I did another episode of the excellent Jurassic World: Chaos Theory (Netflix), which … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 07/07/24

The Small Screen Diaries- 07/06/24

I finished some shows today. First up, bridgerton (Netflix), which is going to be impossible to not recommend as the best audio description for a TV show next time around. I loved the season. There was one moment when they were mentioning all the Bridgerton’s, and I feel like we’re at that point where we are just pretending like Season 1 never happened. Violet is sad to see Francheska move so far away, and this would have been the best time to point out that her eldest daughter didn’t appear at all, but instead we just decide to never mention … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 07/06/24

The Small Screen Diaries- 07/05/24

Presumed Innocent (Apple Plus) is really starting to make me wonder if they’re gonna follow the ending from the film. There were some clues dropped, but Gyllenhaal is also quite an unreliable narrator. I don’t like the timeframe that he supposedly had to do all this, when he didn’t go there for that. And, the statement about her being afraid of some guy from work, I’m wondering if the casting of Peter Sarsgaard is going to lead to a surprise twist. he’s a big enough name that it would be one hell of a twist for the man prosecuting Gyllenhaal, … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 07/05/24

The Small Screen Diaries- 07/04/24

How did you spend your Independence Day? Luckily, we didn’t have to fight aliens. That’s good news. I celebrated with The Boys (Amazon), which had a killer twist ending to it, but also featured so many rule pushing moments. I love how The Boys is constantly always asking itself “what can we get away with?” Or “what will our audience be willing to watch?” Because there are things in this episode, I’m not even sure would earn an R rating. Definitely across the run of the show, but maybe even in each episode. Like, Firecracker’s gift to Homelander? And, if … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 07/04/24

The Small Screen Diaries- 07/03/24

Dammit. Amazon is officially currently on my shit list for dropping Outer Range. They cancelled the show after 2 seasons, and I should have known better. Every time a show like this gets cancelled, it in turn makes me less invested in the future of other shows. Really, it is the lack of resolution. It’s the idea that we can be loyal fans, and do exactly what we are supposed to do, watch these shows over and over, and never get resolution. At least with a movie, you get an ending. Aside from the Divergent franchise, I can’t think of … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 07/03/24

The Small Screen Diaries- 07/02/24

Inching closer to the finale of Sweet Tooth (Netflix), in an episode that saw Gus finally reach Alaska, but right behind him is Helen. Look, I love me some Sweet Tooth, but people find their random ass locations or are found at random ass locations far too much in this show. I feel like if the story required Gus to find the lost city of Atlantis, it would take him two minutes to find it, and another minute for everyone else to find him. I can actually imagine him being greeted down at Atlantis with “No one has been down … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 07/02/24

Ultraman Rising

I’m just going to admit, I may not be the definitive critic for this. I have never seen any Ultraman shows or films before, on top of that whole niche thing of being a blind film critic. So, this ting could totally deviate and break every Ultraman rule, and I would have no idea. I’m just approaching it like Ultraman just starts today, with this film. Which this film also doesn’t want me to do. Ultraman Rising definitely has that vibe of “you should know what this is”, from the very start. It isn’t debilitating, and you can watch the … Continue reading Ultraman Rising

The Small Screen Diaries- 07/01/24

The year is half over, and what do we have to show for it? Another episode of House Of The Dragon (MAX), which was more excellent work by the team of DeWolfe/Samuelson on that audio description writing/narration. This episode damn near checked in on everyone, and served as a nice “where are we now”, with the big take always for me being that Allicent’s brother seems useless and unlikely to survive the season, Damon’s nightmare had imagery that shook me, and Raynera really seemed to also be affected after her conversation with Allicent. And Jace? He tightened his grip on … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 07/01/24

The Small Screen Diaries: 06/30/24

I was saddened to learn, but not shocked, that Apple Plus will not be giving a conclusion to The Big Door Prize, which is cancelled after two seasons. The second season had just so many loose ends, I wish it had been given a third and final season to wrap up all those open storylines, but that is not the timeline we live in. Jurassic World: Chaos Theory (Netflix) which I just refuse to binge watch, finally got Ben and Sammie to Yaz, and her perfect commune of dinosaur free living. Then, the bad guys show up, and it turns out … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries: 06/30/24

the Small Screen Diaries- 06/29/24

Yesterday, I kicked it off with S3E7 of Bridgerton (Netflix), which Liz Gutman has done such an exceptional job writing audio description for all season long. I was surprised that this was the second to last episode of the season, because I wasn’t sure where we were going next, but clearly Cressida has something up her sleeve. Can anyone really blame her? Her future sounds perpetually terrible. Either marry an old man, or go live in the country with her aunt. I think she’s a redeemable villain because of that, so I hope they don’t go too far with it. … Continue reading the Small Screen Diaries- 06/29/24

The Small Screen Diaries- 06/28/24

It’s a recap of my birthday, so obviously I spent the day popping bottles. TV? What is that? It was honestly a solid birthday, with a nice dinner. And I did manage to watch a few shows, so let’s talk about them. Sweet Tooth (Netflix) was giving me like a mild panic attack. When Wendy was trying to figure out how to get to Becky, I thought for sure that they would grab her and use her to get to Becky. Thank freaking God. That scene with Rosie having to kill her son was *a lot*. Like, this is the … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 06/28/24
