The Small Screen Diaries- 06/14/24

Geek Girl (Netflix) made me feel SO old in the third episode. So, our protagonist is this fairly functional high schooler who will be a model at some point, and the third episode centered around her and Nat not being able to initially sign because Harriet’s stepmother has issues. Then, we set up for her dad’s 40th birthday party. And I just felt so old. I was like, wait… I’m older than her dad? I could have this stepmother character as my spouse and Harriet as my daughter? It’s amazing how life reminds you all the time that you are … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 06/14/24

Talking Emmys: Best Actor In A Comedy Series

Last year, this category was pretty stacked. it was so stacked that Emmy voters chose not to nominate both of the leads of Only Murders In The Building. This year, Jason Segal is out of competition with no new season of Shrinking, Bill Hader’s Barry is over, Jason Sudekis is out of Ted Lasso, and even nominees like Donald Glover and Atlanta aren’t there to pull votes. So, with the biggest new star studded comedy featuring female leads, can both Murders be in the Building? 1) Jeremy Alan White (The Bear) The literal most obvious nomination. Signed, sealed, delivered. I’m … Continue reading Talking Emmys: Best Actor In A Comedy Series

The Small Screen Diaries- 06/13/24

I suppose most people want to hear that I started the new season of The Boys (Amazon), which is one of my favorite shows. I’m sad there will only be one more season after this, but if they plan on killing Butcher, as things aren’t looking good here, then I can understand it. Antony Starr’s profile has also risen a lot, and I’m sure he wants to explore film. The new season immediately introduced a new member of the seven, who gets recruited in the first episode, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan shows up. I assume he has a bat somewhere. I’m … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 06/13/24

Talking Emmys: Best Actress In A Comedy Series

I’m assuming we can get to six nominees, but there is a possibility that only five nominees exist. Thus, I must rank these fine actresses. 1) Jean Smart (Hacks) Signed. Sealed. Delivered. Not only is she getting the nomination, but she’s winning. yes, I know there was a fantastic (now) lead performance in The bear, but come on now. Jean Smart is Hacks. Yes, she has won before, but Julia Louis-Dreyfus won consistently for Veep. 2) Ayo Edebiri (The Bear) In a different year, a different season, perhaps Ayo taking center stage for Season 2 of The bear,(and in my … Continue reading Talking Emmys: Best Actress In A Comedy Series

The Small Screen Diaries- 06/12/24

It’s Pride Month, and June 12th is a day I will always remember, as I woke up to knew that a man walked into a gay nightclub in my city and opened fire. Eventually, we would hear that 49 souls died that night,This also came a day after Christina Grimmie was shot and killed by someone at a performance of hers, also in Orlando. I’m always aware of this period, and since the majority of my personal friends on social media are too, it’s a day I’ll never forget. I have a friend whose birthday is June 12th, and was … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 06/12/24

Talking Emmys: Best Comedy Series

What a difference a year makes. yet, due to impeccable timing, this category is not nearly as wide open as the drama race due to several strong returning contenders. And once again, due to impeccable timing, one show is dropping its third season during the voting period on the second, while another will drop its 4th season while people are voting on whether or not the third should win. Freshness. It has its place. 1) The Bear (FX on Hulu) I mean, duh. Right? OF course the Bear is going to get a nomination. I feel like voters are getting … Continue reading Talking Emmys: Best Comedy Series

The Small Screen Diaries- 06/11/24

Outer Range (Amazon) continues to get totally off the rails as Joy has to talk about that whole time travel thing with Royal. Meanwhile, his wife is fighting hard to not lose their ranch, and Autumn is delivered some of the dust which should give her a look at who she really is. Maybe it’s tied to that phone call? Renew this. And… how do you pronounce that thing that goes up your nose in hospitals? I’ve always said it a different way, and have always heard it a different way. I’m enjoying seeing the mythology play out in Blood … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 06/11/24

The Small Screen Diaries- 06/10/24

OK. So I was right about the choice to name the show Eric (Netflix), meaning we get some materialization of this monster. The audio description when we do see him walks such a weird line, like… am I supposed to be scared? Is he funny? Goofy? His voice is dark, but the scenes he appears in it would seem if he was too much he’d be pulling too much focus. What an odd and interesting concept though. I did finish American Rust (Amazon) which almost looked like it was headed to not having the ability to have a second season, … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 06/10/24

the Smal Screen Diaries- 06/09/24

I was so excited to jump back into Sweet Tooth (Netflix) yesterday, even if it means the last season. I’m OK with a three season run, if it means the show knows it is ending, and can wrap up its story on its own terms. I’m still angry that Glow had that stolen from it. I did listen to a review of the season from another one of my favorite critics, MoviesAndMunchies over on YouTube, and he mentioned that he didn’t like Season 2 as much, but I actually thought the show got stronger, as we saw more hybrids, and … Continue reading the Smal Screen Diaries- 06/09/24

The Small Screen Diaries- 06/08/24

Things came together finally in Bodkin (Netflix), but that didn’t stop one of our leads from being served divorce papers, and another from being arrested. They might be really close to locking in this podcast, but AT WHAT COST? I enjoyed the audio description with the bee crawling out from under the covers, because it made me think something truly nefarious was under there, like a snake, then it was a bee. The suspense was there at least. Velma (MAX) still has some brain swapping, and Velma has to figure out how to get Daphne’s brain back in her body. … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 06/08/24

Talking Emmys: Best Supporting Actor In A Drama

Now, I might be a little optimistic here, but I think there’s a chance that we aren’t going to get only two shows in this category, with four nominations each like last year. That being said, it should be obvious that no nominee from last year is eligible in this category. Since this isn’t really about who I’d like to see, let’s break down who exactly is taking these spots. 1) Jon Hamm (The Morning Show) Very likely to be a double nominee this year, with his performance in Fargo certain to land him in the Limited Series category, Ham … Continue reading Talking Emmys: Best Supporting Actor In A Drama

The Small Screen Diaries: 06/07/24

Rumors are swirling around 911: Lone Star that fOX is looking to make next season its last, as the actress who plays Grace has departed ahead of Season 5. The rest of their shows that aren’t animated have awful ratings, so I don’t understand this. I watched the newest episode of The Big Cigar (Apple Plus) where Huey learned the death of his father, another character also dies, the film they are making dies, just a lot of death. Not my favorite limited that Apple has put out this year, but I stand by the excellent work being done by … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries: 06/07/24

Talking Emmy’s: Best Supporting Actress In A Drama

Always remember, Emmy voters are largely and inherently the most boring group of people. So, if you were hoping to see someone from Strange New Worlds, Evil, The Girls On The bus, or any other drama… no. Based on who is in the cast, I think hBO will dominate this category, which last year gave them four nominations out of White Lotus, not to mention a nomination for J Smith Cameron from Succession. 1) Will Be Nominated: Elizabeth Debecki (The crown) Should Be Nominated: Elizabeth Debecki (The Crown) If I had to nominate any singular performance from The Crown, I’d … Continue reading Talking Emmy’s: Best Supporting Actress In A Drama

The Small Screen Diaries- 06/06/24

First, some good news. Apple Plus has confirmed a second season of Palm Royale. I didn’t need it, but maybe someone did. I knocked out the second episode of The Acolyte (Disney Plus), which has attracted a troll army. This show has a 4.7 on IMDB, but every critic I follow or subscribe to is enamored with this project. There’s a huge disconnect here. I think the show is excellent, setting us up with new and fresh characters, a mysterious plot, and a character strong enough to kill Jedi.Nicole Zansorella’s description is really good, when she and the team at … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 06/06/24

Talking Emmys: best Actor In A Drama

Basically, another totally wide open category and race. With shows ending, and the Roy boys no longer eligible, the Actor category is looking to shake things up. but, just who will benefit? 1) Will Be Nominated: Hiroyuki Sanada (Shogun) Should Be Nominated: Abstain. I can’t fully comment on the exact inner working of this performance, since my interpretation is from a blind perspective, which had someone doing the dubbed voice, and audio description covering the rest. I could hear the way he chose to deliver lines, and I thought there was some strong acting there, but unlike some of his … Continue reading Talking Emmys: best Actor In A Drama
