The Small Screen Diaries- 05/09/24

Well, they are officially developing a new The Office for peacock, so that’s terrifying. I don’t know how you manage to get such a perfect cast a second time around. The Frasier reboot lacks the chemistry of the original cast, and that series still has one returning series regular. Be afraid, be very afraid. Dark Matter (Apple Plus) continues on in episode two, with the twist now having been revealed. It is going to be a huge pain in the ass, but we have to always use Jason 2 to describe the other Jason. I felt like there were times … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 05/09/24

Started a new show today, Dark Matter (Apple plus), which has Joel Edgerton, Jennifer Connelly, and Alice Braga in the cast, and has Kline of a twist ending. I will say that when the twist is revealed, the audio description becomes more necessary, and appreciated. Speaking of that audio description, Jedidiah Barton is here as narrator, so you know you’re in good hands. I could see the twist coming, and I won’t reveal it, but it is basically the whole reason to watch the first episode. I’m interested in the “how” we got to the twist, and I’m hoping later … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 05/08/24

Good news! The audio description has been fixed for Jeopardy masters (Hulu), so now I can mention it. It’s the same voice that vi-Tech also has been using this year on Not Dead yet and Will Trent. It’s helpful when you don’t know what the scores are, but admittedly, I watch regular Jeopardy every night without AD, because I’m there for the questions. I play along, and I think a lot of people do. But, thanks to ABC/Hulu for making sure this actually gets done. Parasite: The Grey (Netflix) is an interesting series, still gory as anything out there, but I’m … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 05/07/25

First off, my diary from two day ago should be edited to reflect that Jamie Treacher did the audio description for Tales Of The Empire. Totally botched that name. Sometimes, my notes make no sense, as I use a mix of voice dictation, and trying to phonetically spell things out, but… this has to be on me. That is not a hard name. I don’t know what happened. My apologies. In today’s list, I’m getting closer to the longest adaptation of The Talented Mr Ripley finally finishing, as Ripley (Netflix) has to be coming to an end soon. While Fargo proved you … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 05/06/24

Hope you enjoyed Cinco De Mayo! I finished the terrific limited series Shogun (Hulu), which has less than terrific audio description performed by one voice talent, but the written stuff is good, and the narrator’s voice would normally be fine. but this series was such a blast. I do feel like the ending was somewhat abrupt, as I didn’t feel like that was the moment where it was ending, but it was still a great episode, and the series produced some terrific performances. Luckily, the balance was such that I could hear the original actors underneath and the conviction in … Continue reading the Small Screen Diaries- 05/05/24

Was the fourth with you always yesterday? Well, for me it was. I checked out the new animated Star Wars entry Tales Of The empire (Disney Plus), and after realizing how short it was, I did the whole thing. So that’s behind me now. It’s basically a sequel to Tales Of The Jedi, but with a new focus, and one on the darker side, focusing on elements of the empire, and some series staples like General Grievous. The show has excellent audio description by Descriptive Video Works, which immerses us with narration from Jamie Treacher. While I’m not sure the … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 05/04/24

The Small Screen Diaries- 05/03/24

Since today is Star Wars Day, let me start off by saying May The 4th Be With You. but, this is about the shows I watched on the 3rd, which isn’t Star Wars Day. So, no Star Wars here. Sorry, Force fans. Second day in the row i get to talk about how audio description for an ABC show failed to make it to Hulu. This week’s episode of Abbott Elementary (ABC) had no audio description as of 6PM EST on 05/03/24. This episode is from Wednesday, so it really should have had it. The episode was still fun, but… … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 05/03/24

The Small Screen Diaries- 05/02/24

I’ll start off with the good news! The Connor’s is coming back for a short final season on ABC. So they will get to finish on their own terms. Now the less good news. I did try to watch Jeopardy Masters (Hulu) and no audio description was available. This is disappointing, not that it stopped me, as I’m there to try and answer those trivia questions too, but I did want to point that out. I made it through the third episode of Dead Boy Detectives (Netflix), which I’m really enjoying, and even though they have a ‘case of the … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 05/02/24

X-Men 97 (Disney Plus) is back again this week with the first in a two parter, which hopefully isn’t the season finale but probably is. Bastion has revealed himself and his plan, and the X-Men are outnumbered and outgunned, even with the additional support from Cable. Some classic phrases during this episode, including Beast and his “My stars and garters!” And Professor X with “To me, my X-Men!”, not to mention the iconic phrase “Magneto was right.” Shoutouts to Omega Red and Silver Samurai were welcomed, and seeing Roberto finally using all of his powers to save Jubilee was nice. Can … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 05/01/24

The Small Screen Diaries- 04/30/24

I’ve seen some stuff on the internet where I guess the woman who feels that Baby Reindeer (Netflix) is about her is calling herself a victim. That’s an interesting take. One thing is for sure, the producers of the show do not consider Martha to be a victim. Episode 3 got a little more nuts as she continued to get a little more over the top, and we’re still in the first half of this series. Like, she’s physically attacking people, and spending hours upon hours outside his flat. I’m scared of where this goes. The audio description is terrific … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 04/30/24

The Small Screen Diaries- 04/29/24

I started off my day with the cheerful Ripley (Netflix), which really put the audio description to work. He killed again, and the attention to detail as Tom spent all this time trying to figure out how to dispose of a body, and clean everything up, really made me appreciate the audio description so much more. probably the best example so far of why this episode needed audio description, even if I did get the stomach churning image of Tom kissing a corpse thanks to the description. So gross. Renegade Nell (Disney Plus) is just a surprise charmer of a … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 04/29/24

The Small Screen Diaries- 04/28/24

Yesterday, i finally started the buzzy Korean horror show Parasite: The Grey (Netflix), which wastes no time in jumping into its plot. It has a lot of explaining to do, so it doesn’t bother with any lead in before the events. In many ways, that is what makes it a strong pilot, is you know exactly what this show is. There is no main character prior to the alien invasion, but we find one after the fact. This show definitely uses body horror, and is very gory, and the audio description leans into that. I’m so happy Netflix decided to … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 04/28/24

I finally allowed myself to finish the incredibly short third season of Girls5Eva (Netflix) and I really I’m sad there aren’t more episodes of this now. I really hope Netflix sticks with this, especially considering it ends on a cliffhanger. I think the show changed a little bit moving to Netflix, but mostly for really positive ways. I did miss Andrew Rannells a bit, so maybe he could pop in and guest in Season 4? The audio description here is doing pretty solid work for a sitcom with constant dialogue. I’m not loving the tier system that much. I tried … Continue reading the Small Screen Diaries- 04/27/24

The Small Screen Diaries- 04/26/24

We’re kicking off today with some surprisingly bad news, at least for fans of NCIS: Hawaii. CBS has cancelled the spinoff after just three seasons, making it (by far) the weakest link in the series so far. I’d argue part of the reason for this is that they are developing NCIS: Origins for next season, as well as the renewal of NCIS: Sydney. Baby Reindeer (Netflix) is still in its lighthearted phase. I noticed the episode length even was closer to that of a sitcom, running approximately 30 minutes. Of course, we’re still back toward the beginning of this whole … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 04/26/24

The Bloody Hundredth

The only film this year to list Tom Hanks and Hitler in the “cast list” section on iMDB. This is the companion documentary to Masters Of The Air, a fantastic limited series on Apple Plus, which was also narrated by Laura Post. This documentary tells the true story, and in many ways would be a spoiler if you wanted the series to surprise you. Real interviews are used, along with footage from the era, and commentary from those involved in the creation and production of Masters of The Air, explaining why this story is so worthy of its own incarnation. … Continue reading The Bloody Hundredth
