The Small Screen Diaries- 01/24/24

Doesn’t the first month on the 24th day of the 24th year feel like some unofficial A24 holiday? Did you accidentally celebrate by watching an A24 title? Also, Jon Stewart is kinda sorta coming home to The Daily Show. The catch is, once a week, and only through the election season. I’m still upset Apple cancelled his show. The Vegas episode tackled that whole casino and lotus flower plot line. It’s funny that the guy casually referred to as a mailman before ended up being Hermes, since they intentionally underdescribed him to not draw attention the first time around. So, … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 01/24/24

When I have more time to fully dive into the Oscar nominations, i will in another post. This is just for TV shows, dammit. And, Monarch (Apple Plus), is such an odd duck. Obviously, it is connecting the stories of the films already made with characters that were not in the films, but… why? And will this pay off somehow in Godzilla vs Kong 2? The ground opened up, so we are now all caught up, but are we? And what are we caught up to? Echo (Disney Plus) dove more into the Indigenous heritage of the character, while also … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 01/23/24

The Small Screen Diaries- 01/22/23

Is Hulu broken, or did The Great North and Grimmsburg just air one episode each and then take a massive break? Not that either show has audio description, but how weird. Especially for the former, which is a returning series, so how would a “preview” even work? In TV news, they are working on a Book Of Eli prequel series with John Boyega. I know, all of you who have been asking for this for the last 14 years have really been pounding the pavement on this, and you are finally getting it. \sarcasm I did devour another episode of … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 01/22/23

The Small Screen Diaries- 01/21/24

Sundays I usually start new shows, but I did polish off an episode of Julia (MAX) where she was being courted to go to CBS. You know, what should happen, is that since CBS didn’t win all those years ago, they should rescue the show now, and it would be like they had her anyway! #SaveJulia Anyone? I did start a new reality competition series called The Trust, which had an interesting premise, until people can’t fucking understand what show they are on. Quite predictably, the ladies chose to backstab the men, which is a hilarious portrayal of women. As … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 01/21/24

The Mission (2023)

Originally, my plan was to watch this and hopefully have one more shortlisted Documentary Feature off my list. Then, the Oscars didn’t short list it, so this is just a review no one will care about. But, in case someone does, it’s valid to discuss this because Disney perpetually makes their feature docs available without audio description. This one is about that guy from a few years back who tried to bring Jesus to a tribe on an island that has stayed in their own little indigenous bubble. This guy had the testicular fortitude, or utter insanity, to approach this … Continue reading The Mission (2023)

Lawmen (Paramount Plus) gave me the second to last (or penultimate) episode as Bass faced his own demons and decided he needed to face Mr. Sundown. I love the audio description on this series. Absolute excellence. There’s a scene where Bass keeps fever dreaming other things that cuts with reality which I thought was done rather well. Also managed another episode of Reacher (Amazon) which had the team get closer to the truth, until the truth decides not to leave any tracks. And on a short news day, also watched an episode of Young Sheldon (MAX) which has audio description. … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 01/20/24

The Small Screen Diaries- 01/19/24

I found out that Apple isn’t moving forward on a third season of Schmigadoon. Honestly, I was shocked they made a second. Very pleasantly surprised, as I love that show, but still surprised. Not shocked by the cancellation, especially after they also ditched The After Party last year. I also wasn’t surprised by who won Celebrity jeopardy (Hulu) this week. That’s the person that I assumed would win the whole thing, so the fact they made the final three doesn’t shock me.I laughed at the audio description. At the very end, when our lovely narrator is filling in that lead … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 01/19/24

The Small Screen Diaries- 01/18/24

Apparently Netflix turned The Gentleman into a TV show. Alright. Moving on…. Percy Jackson and the Olympians (Disney Plus) continues to introduce new characters with as little description of what they look like as possible. Ever wondered what Ares might look like? Keep wondering. Not the most recent episode of The Traitors (Peacock) but I did get the second episode out, and that first elimination really needed to set up the inevitable second quickly. I would have made more of a case to say “remember when I turn out to be faithful, the only reason my name even came up … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 01/18/24

The Small Screen Diaries- 01/17/24

The BAFTA nominations come out today. Excellence in British film. It could be a huge launching pad for All Of Us Strangers for the Oscars, if it was strongly embraced by the BAFTAs like All Quiet On The Western Front was last year. But, in TV world, no really solid news stories. Scott Pilgrim Takes Off (Netflix) featured a jaw dropping return at the end, and more suspicions about that darn robot that keeps popping up that we didn’t really know was popping up because the audio description wasn’t tracking the robot, and pointing it out would have been a … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 01/17/24

The Small Screen Diaries- 01/16/24

I did noticed that Apple has picked up For All Mankind for another season, thankfully, since they left too many doors open in the season finale. Now onto The Brother’s Son (Netflix), which is barely a Michelle Yeoh show at this point. The second episode continued to shape the world, boosting TK as a character a little bit, and having the brothers run around with a head for the episode. I don’t hate the audio description here, and if anything, after hearing all that stuff about the dismembering of the body from the first episode, I felt that this show … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 01/16/24

The Small Screen Diaries: 01/15/24

The Emmys were last night, and Succession predictably did well, while Better Call Saul finished its run with not a single win for anything ever. I’m most excited for Paul Walter Houser who won Supporting Actor in a Limited for Blackbird, which was on Apple Plus in July 2022. If you haven’t seen it yet, you should. He’s fantastic. And now, the shows I actually did watch. My Life With The Walter Boys (Netflix) has some audio description that has grown on me. Of course, four episodes in and I have a bit more of a grasp on this show … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries: 01/15/24

The Too Much TV Roundup- 01/14/24

Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day! I don’t think I watched anything yesterday that fits with today. Maybe I’ll try to do that on the day of, but then I’ll be mentioning it the next day. It’s like having a Newsweek subscription nowadays, when everything has already been discussed. The Critics Choice awards last night were pretty predictable. I did see one site refer to Emma Stone’s win as a “shocker”. Really? Yes, Lily won the Globe… but so did Emma. They were just finally in the same category. Interestingly, the same “journalist” had nothing to say about the “shocker” … Continue reading The Too Much TV Roundup- 01/14/24

The Small Screen Diaries- 01/13/24

The fourth episode of Squid Game: The Challenge (Netflix) just feels like filler. The audio description team, with Sri Gordon as narrator, is still doing solid work, but this episode was just a lot of dumb challenges. The only interesting one was having them vote off three people. That and the way they handled it was fine, and since we ended on a solid number, with 70 contestants remaining, it felt like that was where we needed to go. While I don’t know the results of the Jack In the Box game, it’s not everyone competing, and the fact that … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 01/13/24

The Small Screen Diaries- 01/12/24

Apple better be continuing on with For All Mankind. That season finale was a beast, and did exactly what I thought it would. Because the show takes these leaps forward in time, original cast members have to keep being shaved off because there’s only just so much you can age a person. Just like how last season ended with a few original cast members exiting, it’s highly likely that the way certain characters are written, means the end for them on the show (at least as regulars). However, there was one prominent character whose future was not shown, and that … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 01/12/24

The Small Screen Diaries- 01/11/24

Starting off my column of the day with bad news. MAX has inexplicably struck again, cancelling Julia after two seasons, thus ending Sarah Lancashire’s terrific performance as the famous chef. I refer to everything I said when they cancelled Our Flag Means Death, reminding you that this is a company that used a completed film as a tax write off. But, sadly, Julia isn’t the only show exiting stage right. ABC has announced this will be the final season of the Good Doctor. After failing to produce a spinoff, it’s time for the ABC drama to go away, I guess. … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 01/11/24
