Late Night With The Devil

One of the buzziest horror titles of the year, the indie Late night With The Devil does a lot with very little.A lot of this has to do with casting David Dastmalchian in the lead role of Jack. Dastmalchian has spent years popping up in character actor roles, even really bit parts, but with such a recognizable face. he’s developed a recognition for his work, even if the work is small, or brief, and known for having range. Never has he really been asked to play this type of role, or be the lead actor of the film. Absolutely the … Continue reading Late Night With The Devil

Call Me Country: Beyonce and Nashville’s Renaissance

Beyonce has gone country, and MAX is here to document the occasion. Unfortunately, they allowed this documentary to pass through with TTS audio description, which is disappointing. MAX has largely steered clear of the Test To Speech Robodescriptions, using voices that sound similar to those we encounter on a regular basis in our other accessibility tools as the thing that helps to enhance our entertainment. It’s not really an enhancement so much as the minimum. And I do mean minimum. Text To Speech audio description is less costly, because they skimp on voice talent. That voice talent missing on a … Continue reading Call Me Country: Beyonce and Nashville’s Renaissance

The Small Screen Diaries- 06/08/24

Things came together finally in Bodkin (Netflix), but that didn’t stop one of our leads from being served divorce papers, and another from being arrested. They might be really close to locking in this podcast, but AT WHAT COST? I enjoyed the audio description with the bee crawling out from under the covers, because it made me think something truly nefarious was under there, like a snake, then it was a bee. The suspense was there at least. Velma (MAX) still has some brain swapping, and Velma has to figure out how to get Daphne’s brain back in her body. … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 06/08/24

The American Society Of Magical Negroes

What you were probably looking for was yet another white guy talking about this film. I’m sure the proliferation of thoughts by people who look like me is high. But, I’m here, because I’m a blind film critic, and this film has an audio description track. So, right out of the gate, I want to add that the audio description for this film is fine. I’ve certainly heard more detailed audio description tracks for films with predominantly black casts before, so this is swimming upstream. In fact, it seems like black films and black TV shows almost have a different set … Continue reading The American Society Of Magical Negroes

Talking Emmys: Best Supporting Actor In A Drama

Now, I might be a little optimistic here, but I think there’s a chance that we aren’t going to get only two shows in this category, with four nominations each like last year. That being said, it should be obvious that no nominee from last year is eligible in this category. Since this isn’t really about who I’d like to see, let’s break down who exactly is taking these spots. 1) Jon Hamm (The Morning Show) Very likely to be a double nominee this year, with his performance in Fargo certain to land him in the Limited Series category, Ham … Continue reading Talking Emmys: Best Supporting Actor In A Drama

Dune: Part II

in preparation for this masterpiece of a film, I felt compelled to warm up my Dune knowledge by rewatching the first film. I have to say,as someone with no prior knowledge of anything Due before watching the first Denis Villeneuve entry, I wasn’t jumping all over it like a lot of people. I think about the aspect of my blindness, and how that affects my watching and enjoyment, and there is a possibility that the spectacle just doesn’t translate, and I’m left with a script that is difficult to follow. I’m careful not to complain too much, because I hate data … Continue reading Dune: Part II

The Small Screen Diaries: 06/07/24

Rumors are swirling around 911: Lone Star that fOX is looking to make next season its last, as the actress who plays Grace has departed ahead of Season 5. The rest of their shows that aren’t animated have awful ratings, so I don’t understand this. I watched the newest episode of The Big Cigar (Apple Plus) where Huey learned the death of his father, another character also dies, the film they are making dies, just a lot of death. Not my favorite limited that Apple has put out this year, but I stand by the excellent work being done by … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries: 06/07/24

Talking Emmy’s: Best Supporting Actress In A Drama

Always remember, Emmy voters are largely and inherently the most boring group of people. So, if you were hoping to see someone from Strange New Worlds, Evil, The Girls On The bus, or any other drama… no. Based on who is in the cast, I think hBO will dominate this category, which last year gave them four nominations out of White Lotus, not to mention a nomination for J Smith Cameron from Succession. 1) Will Be Nominated: Elizabeth Debecki (The crown) Should Be Nominated: Elizabeth Debecki (The Crown) If I had to nominate any singular performance from The Crown, I’d … Continue reading Talking Emmy’s: Best Supporting Actress In A Drama

The Small Screen Diaries- 06/06/24

First, some good news. Apple Plus has confirmed a second season of Palm Royale. I didn’t need it, but maybe someone did. I knocked out the second episode of The Acolyte (Disney Plus), which has attracted a troll army. This show has a 4.7 on IMDB, but every critic I follow or subscribe to is enamored with this project. There’s a huge disconnect here. I think the show is excellent, setting us up with new and fresh characters, a mysterious plot, and a character strong enough to kill Jedi.Nicole Zansorella’s description is really good, when she and the team at … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 06/06/24

Unfrosted

Some years ago, admittedly a little hard to remember since I’m not sure the film ever got a real theatrical release, a film called Food Fight existed, and used a lot of these mascot type characters. I’ve seen a lot of negative reviews of Unfrosted, and my sentence as a film judge is that all critics who thought this was bad need to also see Food Fight, because this kinda thing can be a lot worse. When i saw it, it was just freely on YouTube because no one cared about Food Fight. Unfrosted is Jerry Seinfeld’s love letter to … Continue reading Unfrosted

Talking Emmys: best Actor In A Drama

Basically, another totally wide open category and race. With shows ending, and the Roy boys no longer eligible, the Actor category is looking to shake things up. but, just who will benefit? 1) Will Be Nominated: Hiroyuki Sanada (Shogun) Should Be Nominated: Abstain. I can’t fully comment on the exact inner working of this performance, since my interpretation is from a blind perspective, which had someone doing the dubbed voice, and audio description covering the rest. I could hear the way he chose to deliver lines, and I thought there was some strong acting there, but unlike some of his … Continue reading Talking Emmys: best Actor In A Drama

The Small Screen Diaries- 06/05/24

I definitely jumped in on The Acolyte (Disney Plus), since it’s “the moment”. I’m just not binge watching both episodes on the same day. So the first episode was bad ass, introduced great characters, and a mystery I’m actually interested in. The actors and actresses as interesting and top notch. i didn’t realize that was Carrie Anne moss in that opening sequence until I checked IMDB. We’ve also got Dafne Keen here being a total badass again. She’s using all that training she got from Logan, clearly. This is my favorite Star Wars show since the Mandalorian showed us that … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 06/05/24

Woody Woodpecker and Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp

I used to, like a lot of people, enjoy the wacky nonsensical humor of Woody Woodpecker, a bird that didn’t talk much but had an instantly recognizable laugh. Someone got the right to him, and has no idea what to do with him, so we get the most random and generic storylines. Neither of these films connect, so you don’t need to see one to see the other. The first Woody Woodpecker, which skipped a noticeable theatrical domestic run, lacks anyone you’ve ever heard of in the cast, which is shocking considering Justin Timberlake was in yogi Bear, and basically … Continue reading Woody Woodpecker and Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp

Talking Emmys: Best Actress In A Drama

And now for something completely different. This is a category where every single nominee from last year is ineligible either through the show not airing, or having completed. That means, every single slot is theoretically up for grabs. I do mean theoretically. So here are my picks for the six ladies most likely to hear their names called Emmy morning, and four who might. 1) Will Be Nominated: Jennifer Aniston (The Morning Show) Should Be Nominated: Jennifer Aniston (the Morning Show) I’d love to see both her and Reese, but this category *might* be too competitive for both to get … Continue reading Talking Emmys: Best Actress In A Drama

The Small Screen Diaries- 06/04/24

I was told I should really check out this anime series Blood Of Zeus (Netflix), so I did. The show is OK, but the audio description is strong. the show is fairly violent, and I felt like the description captured the blood and gore rather well. But there was also a fight scene where one of the main characters was protecting his mom from being poked with a hot poker, and I couldn’t tell if her son defending her was killing his foes or just knocking them all out or something. But, it’s a violent and gory show that embraces what … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 06/04/24
