The Small Screen Diaries- 02/15/24

Did you feel like you got hit on the head yesterday? That’s because Paramount Global has axed streamer Noggin, which launched as a cable channel in 199, before developing its own paid service in 2015. Nine years later, Paramount Global is on fire, and they need to cut costs. A lot of the basic core programs of Noggin are available on Paramount Plus anyway, so I’m sure this is just a redundancy they felt was needed. I was more surprised that 800 people worked for Noggin. Just to balance themselves out, they also cancelled Evil. So, something on either end … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries- 02/15/24

Well, I said, and I’ll say it again, the post-strike cancellation wave is still bashing us. It likely will take a break for Turkey Day, but not before Disney Plus could axe The Muppets Mayhem. In fact, on the film side, rumor has it that they are trying to sell off The Bike Riders. Not sure why, as that played fairly well at the festivals, but whatever. in other cancellation news, Melissa Barrera was fired from the new Scream 7 for having the audacity to tweet. No apologies required, the Scream franchise has so many surviving characters alive right now, … Continue reading The Too Much TV Roundup- 11/21/23

While it does seem like SAG is taking this latest offer seriously, they do have some things to iron out, and they’re planning another meeting. Meanwhile, it took until November for Hulu to renew The Bear. Why? Are they that hard up? The series is projected to win Emmy’s this year for the streamer. They literally can’t afford to lose the show, not with Handmaid’s Tale going into its final season. Their only other prestige show would be Only Murders In The Building. 10) How To Become A Cult Leader (Netflix) English Audio Description?: Yes Status: Limited In the fifth … Continue reading The Too Much TV Roundup- 11/06/23

A tentative deal has been reached between the studios and the writers. The details have yet to be made public, but should be shortly as the membership has to vote on it. An official vote by leadership happens on Tuesday, which will solidify this a bit more, and possibly allow some writers to return to work. Most writers will have to wait until the contract is fully ratified by the WGA as a whole, but writers for talk shows are expected to resume possibly later this week, as all they need is for Tuesday’s vote to pass. 11) Daryl Dixon … Continue reading The Too Much TV Roundup- 09/24/23

If all you have is Network TV, tonight you are in luck. CBS begins airing the first season of Yellowstone. Give it a looksie. Also, later in the week, look out for the season premiere of the new season of American Horror Story, as well as the final season of Sex Education. 12) Boy Meets World (Disney Plus) English Audio Description?: No Status: Ended I could have skipped this episode. It’s just this weird Halloween themed episode where Cory thinks he’s turning into a werewolf. However, it does bring Topanga back who hasn’t had anything to do in Season 2, … Continue reading The Too Much TV Roundup- 09/16/23

I saw the upcoming list of shows starting next week, and Virgin River is likely the one most worth mentioning. Though, I am really happy that I Am Groot got a second season. 14) The Lincoln Lawyer (Netflix) English Audio Description?: Yes Status: Renewed Good news for fans, the show got renewed. I actually enjoyed everything I saw yesterday, and this is on the bottom really for two reasons. The first being that this series is still not describing the Spanish dialogue. I’m working on my DuoLingo, and I’m not adept at this, other than picking up a few words … Continue reading The Too Much TV Roundup- 09/02/23

Well, Amazon done gone and pissed me the hell off. be careful what you wish for kids, because sometimes you get TV news. Amazon, in an effort to endear themselves with their subscribers, has reversed their second season renewals on both The Peripheral and A League of Their Own. The last one was baffling, because I know it was granted a tax waiver, so it was even cheaper to produce (plus, I thought they had already started filming). Apparently, the service that put so many years between seasons of Good Omens that people assumed it was dead, is worried about … Continue reading The Too Much TV Roundup- 08/18/23

The WGA is attempting to sit down and begin talks again, and we shall see how that progresses. I think the Television Producers would prefer to have writers back first, working on scripts for the actors to actually shoot once they resolve the SAG strike.. 12) The Horror Of Delores Roach (Amazon) English Audio Description?: Yes Status: Not Yet Renewed I keep hoping I’ll like this story more. I want Justina Machado to have a hit new series, I’m just not sure this is it. It’s very much her telling her own version of the story, but it feels clunky. … Continue reading The Too Much TV Roundup- 08/10/23

Well, the WGA didn’t end up going back to the table after all. So the strike is still on. i truly believe these studios refuse to budge on AI, and the guilds can’t afford to, because they understand once they allow it in the door contractually it will start putting people out of work. When you start scanning background/atmosphere talent and owning their likeness in perpetuity, that’s the end of acting, and when writers start being hired to essentially do a rewrite instead of write a script, but it’s a rewrite of an AI generated script, their already paltry fee … Continue reading The Too Much TV Roundup- 08/04/23

NBC announced some solid news items yesterday. Apparently, they were the only smart network, and actually have episodes banked. So, in the fall, new episodes of Magnum PI, Quantum Leap, and two new dramas, Found, and The Irrational will be airing opposite reality shows and reruns from other networks. 12) The Golden Girls (Hulu) English Audio Description?: Yes Status: Ended I’m not going to deep dive this episode, but the direct answer is that this episode wouldn’t exist in todays landscape. Sure, someone will point out that deep inside the barrage of offensive jokes is a heart somewhere, which is … Continue reading The Too Much TV Roundup- 07/19/23

What a disappointing day of TV. 13) The Crowded Room (Apple Plus) English Audio Description?: Yes Status: Limited So, the show is going to try and confuse you through poor direction and writing. Got it. If this turns out that he has a split personality disorder, and this is like identity, I’m calling it now. We open with a shooting, and then transition to Tom Holland sitting in an interrogation room, where he talks about his time in high school and buying weed. WHAT? Luckily, I love Holland, so I’ll give this one more episode, but that was an awful … Continue reading The Too Much TV Roundup- 07/09/23

By the way, there’s never been a better time to catch up on a show. If there’s something you didn’t watch initially, and were worried you’d never catch up on, the writers strike and possible actors strike will mean a lot of shows that would have returned in September, won’t be. 13) The Family Stallone (Paramount Plus) English Audio Description?: Yes Status: Renewed It’s just not my type of show. Even with Sly in it. I just don’t get this brand of programming. So, while I’m not mad at this show, I’ll be freeing up a slot in my weekly … Continue reading The Too Much TV Roundup- 07/05/23

Well, started off my morning with shitty news. Apple Plus has cancelled high Desert. honestly, I understand it. The pilot was off putting initially, but once you get past it, Patricia Arquette is doing a hell of a job keeping this thing together. And, Matt Dillon and Brad Garrett do a pretty decent job supporting her. I would have probably renewed this, and I’m sad to see this character go, but Apple released a lot of comedies in the Spring, and right after this was Platonic, which is a better show and really deserves a second season. Shrinking and The … Continue reading The Too Much TV Roundup- 07/01/23

A couple of things. First, I have not properly given a shoutout to Tubi, which is now offering a select number of titles with audio description. This is their first month, and they already have surpassed AMC Plus. Hah. I do plan on watching something from them soonish to support their new offerings, and give a review on how easy it is to access it. You can find a list of titles where you can find all the lists of titles for all the streaming services.
