Going In Blind: The Sun Never Sets

I definitely have not fully participated in the entirety of Joe Swanberg’s filmography, but the indie darling who helped push forward the mumblecore movement is back with a feature-length film that feels like one of his more accessible works. Perhaps this is a new form he has taken following opportunities like the Netflix series Easy, which ran for three seasons. Maybe dabbling in higher-profile projects with larger budgets got Swanberg moderately interested in tackling something starring Dakota Fanning, Jake Johnson, and Cory Michael Smith. The Watchers

If I was the daughter of M. Night Shyamalan, I’m not sure I would want to tread in the same waters. I feel like the bar is so high, that even if you are able to out direct your father’s most incompetent directing for films like The Last Airbender and After Earth, you would still have a hard time beating his older works like The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, or Signs, or even the more recent Split. The Equalizer 3

I don’t know why this is the one film Denzel Washington feels emotionally attached to that he keeps making sequels. The first film was fine. Gritty, he kicked ass, and equalized. Now, somehow he’s in Europe protecting Dakota Fanning and some Italians, and I’m really not sure how we got here. It’s like they are trying to apply the rule of John Wick to the Equalizer, but he works much better as a Luke Cage figure, who defends his own neighborhood than going global.
