Even the most aware box office predictors weren’t predicting Gatsby’s phenomenal opening. Most of us had a realistic idea of how many people Baz Luhrmann could appease, and it was nowhere near 50 million.
1) Iron Man 3- 72.4 weekend, 284.8 total
It didn’t quite meet my expectation of a 78 million weekend, but it held OK, dropping only 58% in week two. It still proved to be the movie to beat, though all that will change next weekend with Star Trek: Into Darkness cutting into the box office.
2) The Great Gatsby- 51.1 weekend, 51.1 total
Massive. I would point out, however, that Gatsby only has a B cinemascore, so 200 million is out of the question. With all the competition in the coming weeks, Gatsby is more likely to finish with a spectacular 130-140M.
3) Pain and Gain- 5.0 weekend, 41.6 total
A slightly disappointing total for a Mark Wahlberg/Dwayne Johnson/Michael Bay effort.
4) Peeples- 4.8 weekend, 4.8 total
BOMB. Nuclear. To have Tyler Perry’s name in front of the film, and be this low… that’s crazy. So much for Kerry Washington’s star power at the box office. Looks like she’ll need a few more seasons of Scandal before she can turn that into an A-list movie career.
5) 42- 4.6 weekend, 84. 7 total
The Jackie Robinson bio that no one saw coming, with a virtually unknown actor in the lead, has over twice as much total as Pain and Gain, and has also outgrossed Tom Cruise’s Oblivion. Now that’s impressive.
6) Oblivion- 3.8 weekend, 81.6 total
7) The Croods- 3.6 weekend, 173.2 total
8) The Big Wedding- 2.5 weekend, 18.2 total
9) Mud- 2.3 weekend, 8.3 total
10) Oz The Great and Powerful- 0.8 weekend, 229.9 total
