I have yet to officially review a videogame on this site, but after having played Destiny for over two weeks, and getting my character to level 24 (almost 25), and acquiring some legendary gear, I feel like I’ve enjoyed the game enough to post a few thoughts about the game.
First off, I play on XBOX One. The graphics are pretty solid, but nothing that I would call earth shattering or groundbreaking. It’s pretty much meeting the standard of previous next-gen titles that are all very pretty to look at. The story is thin, and you’ve heard it before. You’re a guardian, and possibly the only one who can save the world as we know it from extinction from an outside alien threat. I think somewhere in a room, there are a bunch of index cards with plots on them, and game developers just pull one out of a box and run with it. So, I wouldn’t give them points for story.
Nor would I based on the gameplay of the story, as most missions feel relatively repetitive, like you’re fighting waves of small minion forces before you get to a big boss. Often times, you’re running the same route. The game offers a “vanguard” mode, where you basically just repeat missions made harder for some vanguard specific XP, so you can get better vanguard gear.
There’s a bunch of different vendors you can buy stuff from to level up your guy, but I gotta say… it’s all really boring. My problem is that you spend a lot of time getting to level 20 so you can buy all this stuff, and then you get here and now have to spend a ton of time leveling up your vanguard rank, crucible rank, or clan rank to get better gear. OR you can just hope for it to drop, which does occasionally happen.
The level cap being so low is a problem. There’s also very little social capabilities in a game full of social promise. If you’re in the Tower, there’s no chat for everyone in the tower (who isn’t in a party). Basically, the only way you can talk to someone is to invite them to a party. You also can’t gift people items like you can in other games (like Diablo III). I recently got a legendary Hunter Class armor that I sold, because I’m using a Warlock class. Had I been able to give it to my friend, that would have been so much better.
Destiny is the game of the moment that is waiting to be surpassed by the next game. And unfortunately for Destiny, there are a TON of games coming out in September, October, and November that will chip away at its total player base. By the time the first rumored DLC for Destiny comes out in December, I suspect Destiny’s active player base will only be a 1/4th of what it is today, because Destiny seems super repetitive super fast. The game I was addicted to prior to Destiny was Diablo III, and I’m already considering returning to Diablo III because Destiny is starting to bore me.
If I were Bungie, and I was reading the poor reviews, and the poor feedback from players, I’d move up that DLC and I’d make sure it had something worth talking about in it. You need to make some changes to Destiny, before you become a very expensive has-been.
Adding insult to injury, I consistently have a sound glitch when I’m in party chat. I’ve seen other players complaining about this similar glitch, yet after two weeks, no patch has fixed it. Are they lazy at Bungie, or just incompetent?
