Melissa McCarthy needs better films. Even if that means her not taking a starring role, like she did in St Vincent. She just simply needs better films. Both Identity Thief and Tammy are very mediocre films. Both of them were elevated by McCarthy’s performance, as she tries really hard to salvage the film. Honestly? I can’t wait for someone to realize that McCarthy is a good actress, and puts her in a dramatic project.

McCarthy was terrific in St Vincent, which I had the fortunate experience of watching before Tammy. Tammy is just… very average. It has a few funny moments, and a few jokes that fall flat. McCarthy takes dull moments and tries to find the honesty in them. There are some really crappy things that happen to Tammy in the film, and her reaction always feels honest. She works from a different place. When her husband cheats on her, she feels it. When guys reject her, she feels it. One of the best things about McCarthy is that she’s authentic in her performances, but if she keeps getting mediocre films, people will stop calling.

Tammy isn’t an awful film, and will probably make you chuckle a few times. It’s definitely disappointing. Even the supporting cast is squandered. No one came out of this film ahead.
