To start off my 2014 In Review set of posts, I figured I’d start small and honor the best original songs that made an impact in 2014, and the Best Animated Films of 2014. Over all, I saw 123 of the films released in 2014. So, while I didn’t see every film, I did see a broad enough selection to make my “year end” awards seem somewhat meaningful.
BEST ORIGINAL SONG
5) Glory (Selma)
A really beautiful song that would have ranked higher on my list if it had more to do with the film, and was less of a “credits song”. Still, it’s the kind of song that can get you to stay through the credits, and is a great way to cap off the experience that was Selma.
4) Ryan’s Song (Boyhood)
Really a great “mood setter” for Boyhood. While most people won’t remember the lyrics, they will remember it as “that song from Boyhood”, which is something impressive in of itself.
3) Sing Along/Stay With You/Over Your Shoulder (Rudderless)
I couldn’t pick. Really, this is a blanket nomination for all the original songs in Rudderless. They’re all great, and the biggest problem I have is picking just one song. It probably has the best “soundtrack” of any film this year.
2) “Lost Stars” (Begin Again)
Another really great song, and since it is basically the only great song in Begin Again, it stands out more than the songs in Rudderless. The movie is also kind of about this song, which helps elevate it on my list.
1) “Everything Is Awesome” (The Lego Movie)
It’s the best thing about The Lego Movie. It’s a clever song, catchy, and a great way to really start off and set the tone for the rest of the film.
BEST ANIMATED FEATURE
3) The Lego Movie
It’s a clever film, for sure, and set a new bar of expectations for what is possible from the Lego team. Part comedy, part parody, part action film, and aimed at kids and adults, The Lego Movie is a success.
2) Mr Peabody and Sherman
I know I’m in the minority, and perhaps this landed on my list because I haven’t seen The Boxtrolls… which I am ashamed to admit… but I enjoyed this film. I enjoyed the idea that anyone can be a parent, and anyone can love a child. Family is what you make it. There’s a good message buried here.
1) How To Train Your Dragon 2
But even with the other two films, How To Train Your Dragon 2 is far and away the best animated feature of the year. not only is it actually captivating to look at, but the script is unusually strong for an animated film, let alone an animated sequel. It forces the growth of the franchises main character, Hiccup, turning him from a boy into a man. It’s not just the best animated film of the year, it’s one of the best films of the year, period.
