The Too Much TV Roundup- December 26th

Today, eight titles enter the fray, plus I reviewed three films.

8) Unsolved Mysteries (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

You know what I need from these “real life UFO sighting” stories? I need them to come from other areas of the world. I’m done with hearing about all these Americans who keep thinking they’re about to be beamed up. It makes no sense that they would keep landing here. It’s a very American thing to assume we are the most important country, as if aliens understand our borders. We are not the most populous country, nor do we have the most populous city. Conversely, we are also not the least populated, and if the aliens didn’t want to be seen by some random dude in Michigan, they have a ton of opportunities to go elsewhere. The fact that this was roped in with legit cold crimes this season is sad.

Episode Grade: C-

7) Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities (Netflix)

English Audio description?: Yes

Well, it looks like Del toro is giving directors the chance to go for broke. This episode is so weird and gory, I couldn’t even focus on the intent. it also features an alien angle to it, but… damn. i don’t think I would have watched this episode if i could see what was being described on screen. Not for the squeamish.

Episode Grade: C

6) The Crown (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

While this season has had moments, it’s also kind of the slowest season so far. That was evident in the third episode, which I’m sure people found interesting, but I just did not. We spent seemingly a lot of time on a backstory to a character more connected to Diana than to the Crown, which is what the show is about.

Episode Grade: B-

5) Dead To Me (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Like, either the kids are going to be featured or not. Make up your mind. This episode felt a bit lost, and it’s biggest saving grace was Linda Cardarelli’s performance as Judy, getting her test results back, and later trying to lie to Jen and have her believe everything was going to be OK.

Episode Grade: B

4) Avenue 5 (HBo MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

A somewhat funny episode that ended up pointless, but the satire here was in recalling a leader only to just reelect them anyway. So, in some regards it felt like a wasted episode, but a funny one. We just had to give up 30 minutes to get to the punchline.

Episode Grade: B+

3) The Imperfects (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Well, that’s a wrap. The series finale left open a lot of possibilities, and a huge truth bomb about one of the characters. Season 2 likely would have been more accessible and fun, but then again, Netflix has no patience.

Episode Grade: A-

2) Vampire Academy (Peacock)

English Audio Description?: Yes

yet another episode that felt like it could be the season finale, because of the major cliffhangers, but also wrapping up existing mysteries. yet now we have two more episodes. How is it not obvious to anyone else that Tatiana is the one working with the Stragoi? Like, she just screams “I’m a nefarious asshole” in every conversation she has.

Episode Grade: A

1) Atlanta (FX/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

With this being episode 9, it’s possible next week is the finale. This episode, which centered around paperBoi on his farm in the middle of nowhere, actually had me believing for a hot second that his character wouldn’t survive the episode. It was far more intense than I thought it could be, and a strong representation of how good Brian Tyree Henry is, and why he needs that Oscar nod this year for causeway. It’s time.

Episode Grade: A
