Six shows, two movies. That was my day yesterday. How did those shows stack up?
6) Tell Me Lies (Hulu)
English Audio Description?: Yes
Thank God. It’s over.
Episode Grade: C, Series Grade: C+
5) The Mosquito Coast (Apple Plus)
English Audio Description?: Yes
After the harrowing experience of the second episode, our little family of fugitives make it to their destination. And like most mysterious organizations, with underground locations, this one has one of those nicknames that just strikes fear. La Casa Roja. Fuck Me. When i heard that, I upgraded my alarm system and hired personal security. You know what that translates to? The Red House. If this show was in English and our white American leads made it to their hideout, where other white leads told them… welcome. You’re safe. No one knows about this place. That’s why it’s called…. The Red house. You’d be like… that’s the name? Of all the names you can come up with, that is it? La casa roja is the kind of name a white guy wrote thinking that most of the audience would find it to be exotic simply because it was being spoken in non-English. But, no, I don’t think traveling halfway across the world to live off the grid at “The Red House” really makes me think these writers have something neat up their sleeve.
Episode Grade: B-
4) Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet Of Curiosities (Netflix)
English Audio Description?: Yes
In this episode, which broke the hour mark, a housewife wants to use this lotion that is causing a skin rash and making her itch. I wish this episode was that simple. I really do want to know if the awful acting is a choice at this point, because some heavy hitters have shown up, but they’re all acting like they’ve been cast in a faithful remake of Plan 9 From outer Space. Is the point of the series to have that B-Movie acting? And if so… why? These stories have the potential to be actually scary, but the acting pulls me out of it every single episode.
Final Grade: B
3) The Watcher (Netflix)
English Audio Description?: Yes
As the show comes closer to its end, it is actually starting to get good. This episode picked right back up where we left off, in the tunnels from Barbarian, with Bobby chasing someone down. Unfortunately that doesn’t quite work out, and just when these guys are ready to sell and leave, they get a surprise sneak attack from a terrific Jennifer Coolidge. Say what you want about Ryan Murphy’s direction and story and plot structure, but he gets great actors, and great performances.
Episode Grade: A-
2) Leopard Skin (Peacock)
English Audio Description?: Yes
This show is catching my attention. In the second episode, we get a lot more backstory on the three criminals, in a very interesting way that somewhat reveals why the title of the show is the way it is. Very twisty. I like it.
Episode Grade: A-
1) Tulsa King (Paramount Plus)
English Audio Description: Technically, Yes.
The worst audio description continues on an otherwise terrific show, which takes our mafia boss home to bury his brother. While he’s there, he learns a dark secret. And also, while he’s there, his…. Employees?…. Get accosted by a biker gang that apparently is also the police force for Tulsa. I’m guessing when he returns home, someone who is not Stallone will be getting fucked up.
