The Too Much TV Roundup- 02/10/23

I’m just gonna keep dumping shows I don’t like after 2 or 3 episodes. That is what peak TV means to me. And, at least one show is getting the axe today. On a positive note, while Reboot was unable to find a home, Showtime has decided to save Netflix’s recently cancelled Uncoupled. Maybe the networks and streaming services could just stop fucking around and keep shows on that have fans so they don’t need other networks to save them. I want to be happy for Uncoupled, but i think about how Let The Right One in was recently cancelled by them and is now looking for a new home, and American Rust was cancelled much earlier, and was saved by FreeVee. Maybe before cancelling a show, we can just do a trade, like in sports?

Anyway, here’s what I’ve got.

8) koala man (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

This show became aggressively unfunny rather fast. I normally like these types of shows, but the humor here is non existent, which is sad for the streamer that houses Solar opposites, Crossing Swords, and other like minded success stories. I’m cutting this one out of my life. Sorry, Koala fans. This is not a good show.

Episode Grade: C-

7) Night Court (NBC/Peacock)

English Audio Description?: Yes

This is also a critically unfunny show, it just has talent on camera. John larroquette is making me want to keep giving this show a chance to find it’s feet, but damn… this show needs better writers. This show is supposed to remind us what we missed about all those great comedies of the 80’s and 90’s that were almost always multi-cam, but it feels like it was written by someone who had only seen Kenan and Kel as their point of reference, or some 1 season wonder.

Episode Grade: C

6) Chicago Party Aunt (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

So, she’s wearing a device that she has to legally keep proving she’s sober by blowing into it, but there’s this parade… and they want her to ride on a float…. So shenanigans. It’s not Netflix’s strongest animated sitcom, but watching this the same day as Koala Man really gave me perspective.

Episode Grade: B-

5) The Chase (ABC/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: no

Brad decimated the competition. I’m shocked everyone kept going for the higher offer. Like, after Brad sent the first girl home… but they all thought they were good enough, and they all came up wanting. Brad caught the last guy with time remaining. It was a bloodbath.

Episode Grade: B+

4) So Help Me Todd (CBS/Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

A very entertaining hour as Todd and his mother find themselves on different sides of a case, and can’t communicate.

Episode Grade: A-

3) The daily Show With Chelsea Handler (Comedy)

English Audio Description?: no

I’ve committed myself to watching at least one episode from each of these candidates. Handler was hilarious. I’m not a huge fan of hers, but her jokes and timing landed perfectly. And she humanized lea Michele. I think my host rankings right now are Handler, Leslie jones, Wanda Sykes, and then DL Hughley. Net up is Sarah Silverman.

Episode Grade: A-

2) Jack Ryan (Amazon)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Another terrific episode in what is really mounting to be a terrific season so far. I think I like Season 3 the best so far out of all the seasons. I love how Ryan is finding a way to keep the upper hand, even though he’s also on the run.

Episode Grade: A

1) Ghosts (CBS/Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

I normally love Ghosts anyway, but this week with Trevor’s parents coming back to mourn the loss of their son, and the Parent Trap style storyline of trying to get them back together, I was already invested. But then two things happened, and then I knew this was an extra special episode. 1) Tara Reid. I won’t spoil how Tara Reid got here, but she’s playing herself, and it’s magical. 2) The repurposing of the Ross and Rachel dynamic, and finding a new way to use the line “We were on a break!”

Episode Grade: A
