Still: A Michael j Fox Story

Where I Watched It: Apple Plus

English Audio Description?: Yes

This has been a pretty solid year for documentaries about individuals in the business, especially those still alive, who are getting to contribute to their own stories. Pamela Anderson, Judy Blume, and Wynonna Judd. Now, Michael j Fox brings his life story to the big screen.

I’m a big Fox fan. I do not care that The Secret of My Success wasn’t a critical darling. i love it. I love Greedy. of course, it goes without saying that Back To the Future is iconic, and his performance in The American President was perfectly suited for him.

But, everyone knows the Parkinson’s story. He’s probably the most famous person to have gotten diagnosed with the disease and be at the front of the battle. Sure, Muhammad Ali got his late in life, but Fox felt so young when he was diagnosed, which has allowed him to spend a lifetime raising money for Parkinson’s research and lobbying Congress to help in any way they can.

Still is a well crafted documentary that only slightly fell short. My biggest pet peeve is that the filmmaker, who had to know he was going to ask Fox questions, did so without a microphone for himself. It’s not even about levels, which would be something he could control if he was using a microphone. Then, he could have his voice still softer than Fox. But instead, it’s really just almost inaudible.

From an audio description perspective, this story is told almost entirely by Fox, with a tiny bit of talking coming from someone else. On the negative side, Still likes to use a lot of footage from other Fox projects, but the audio description finds difficulty in letting us know which scenes.

Still, I recommend Still. I’m a fan of the actor, as many are, and I feel like I learned something. The audio description wasn’t perfect, but sometimes it feels good to watch something that means something.
