Where I Watched It: Netflix
English Audio Description?: No
we’re back here again, talking about another film that people who have the ability have decided for us is not something meant for blind people to see. So, they’ve chosen to not provide accessibility. This was a problem when i wanted to see this on VOD as well, so I’m not really even aware if this film ever has had an audio description track, so it’s possible that the blame here lies directly with the studio, and not Netflix. Either way, I’ll admit I fell asleep.
Not for the whole film, but somewhere in the middle, I dozed off for what I might say was 5-10 minutes. This film likely wasn’t getting a grade anyway, as the lack of audio description makes it an unpleasant and difficult experience. It’s a very meditative film, and while I picked up on what drew people to Bill nighy’s somewhat transformative performance, it’s slow, and has so many gaps ripe for audio description. This is sadly one of those films that could benefit so much from having audio description, but instead I find myself appreciating the score, because far too often I have no clue what’s actually happening on the screen. And it’s that score that put me to sleep.
I think had this movie had audio description, it still wouldn’t be my favorite film, but in the bits and pieces I did pick up, there seemed to be a story with some characters and acting worth my time. This is just a film that is hurt even more by not offering accessibility. Truthfully, most films are, but on a rare occasion, a film has such an insane amount of dialogue that it would be hard to interject a lot of audio description. That is not the case here.
I’m always honest. I know we film critics aren’t supposed to doze off, but I’m certain I’m not the first. I’m just owning it. It gave me a nice Power Nap.
Final Grade: Unwatchable.
