They say if you want to master something, you have to spend 10,000 hours doing it. That’s a lot of hours, and I never doubted that Steph Curry put in that time. Though, someone made a documentary about his hard work anyway. We have so many docs coming out on an almost constant basis that Curry’s isn’t even the first athlete doc of the year, nor is it even the first basketball icon. he got beat to that punch back at the beginning of the year by bill Russell.
I like Steph, as he was playing back when I could see, and watched some NBA finals. I was a casual NBA fan, keeping up with the sport just enough to do well enough on NBA2K by familiarizing myself with the players and their skills. So, I know Curry is making a play to be remembered as one of the all time greats, and with his current holding of the 3 point record, he’s in the books right now. but, Steph Curry is shorter than i am, and I would be undersized for the NBA, so he’s been counted out his whole life.
Truthfully, most of the stuff I already knew, but what I found interesting was all the college stuff. i didn’t know that Curry was still trying to finish his degree, albeit slowly while leading the Warriors, and I didn’t know that he did some sketch comedy in college. Those are the kinds of details I want from a documentary like this. We all know these guys work hard. Even the ones who didn’t make the top, worked hard. But, what is that special something that sets Curry apart from the rest? It’s not his height, as he’s far from the shortest player to play in the NBA. And I’m not sure the documentary really nailed those cool facts about Steph that not everyone knew.
Always the problem about making a doc with a living subject who is participating, is they control the narrative, and what they want you to know and see. If Curry struggled with some kind of addiction, and he doesn’t want his fans knowing, that won’t be included even if it is a huge part of who he is. Not saying that he was ever addicted, but anything he doesn’t want us to know, no matter how impactful, is left on the floor.
I felt like this could have dug deeper, but fans of his will like it. The audio description shines best when they are going through basketball game footage, though I would have loved to have more description about Curry’s house, which I’m sure is stunning.
There are a lot of docs this year centered around a famous person, and this just falls a little short of some terrific ones I’ve already seen.
