10 Titles On Disney plus To Scare You This Halloween

Halloween is swiftly approaching. I’ve already done lists for Hulu, Peacock, and MAX. Following the rules, I will try and recommend as many audio described titles that Disney plus has that qualify, and are worth recommending. i obviously haven’t seen every movie. If I can’t get to 10, I will fill in with non-audio described titles.

1) Coco

Audio Description?: Yes

I’m probably going to have this on my list every year. it’s a great film, and it has the distinction of being the last film i saw in theatres by myself when my vision was good enough to still drive. it was on my way one when I realized that would be my last movie by myself. Remember me is a beautiful song, and this is quite literally about the afterlife, with skeletons, and all the Día De los Muertos references you could possibly want.

2) Cruella

Audio Description?: Yes

I’d say Emma Stone’s comedic take on the origin of the most famous dog hater is a solid pick for the family during the season. it’s not really Halloween themed, but villains make for a good focus. I’m sure your daughters will want to dress up like Emma Stone next Halloween, if they haven’t already.

3) Dr Strange and the Multiverse Of Madness

Hiding under the Marvel logo is some pretty trippy horror from director Sam Raimi. Some parents were upset that this got a PG-13 rating, but I’ve seen a lot worse in a PG-13 movie. Still, if you don’t want your kids watching glorified torture porn, this has at least a few moments… and yes, i liked it.

4) Frankenweenie

I’ll be doing a review of this later, but Tim Burton’s stop motion looking adaptation of his short film is the kind of horror designed for kids. It’s a boy and his dog story, except this boy brings his dog back from the dead. Bonus points to Disney for having Burton’s original short film also on the service with audio description.

5) Halloweentown

English Audio Description?: Yes

Halloween town and Halloweentown High both now have audio description. I did not know that until this minute, but I will work at least the first one in for next year. A lot of people adore these movies, and I’m breaking protocol by including them, and trusting all the people who are nostalgic for these films. Try them out.

6) Haunted Mansion

Audio Description?: Yes

I think the newer version is the better film, but having also recently rewatched the original, it was better than I remembered it. Make sure you see Justin Simian’s new film though.

7) Hocus Pocus

Audio Description?: Yes

I wasn’t a huge fan of the sequel, but I’d give it a small thumb up. The original is still the best for me. Both have audio description, and this is a classic for families with kids.

8) Monsters Inc

Audio Description?: yes

It’s about Monsters. it’s right in the title. At the beginning, they are supposed to get scares, but an adorable child changes their mind. Also, double feature potential with monsters University.

9) The nightmare before Christmas

Audio Description?: Yes

Technically qualifies for both holidays, but something about doing Halloween without Jack Skellington just isn’t right.

10 Werewolf By night

English Audio Description?: Yes

It’s about an hour. I enjoyed this last year, and they just released an “in color” version if you are watching with sighted friends. i have a feeling that looks way more violent.
