One of my favorite horror movies is a little seen horror comedy The Final Girls. In many ways, this reminded me of that film. Except, this one is less Groundhog Day, and more Back To The Future.
A teenager lives in a community where years ago three girls were brutally murdered, and the killer was never caught. She really wants to go out with her friends, but her mom is overprotective because she lived in the town back then, along with her dad, and knew the girls who died. She has learned self defense in order to keep the murders from ever happening to her again. Except, after she lets her daughter go out, she’s murdered by the killer.
The rest of the movie makes no sense, and involves time travel formulas that make a DeLorean going 88mph seem like a scientific certainty. But when you get past how her daughter time travels, then you realize you have a modern teen stuck in the 80’s, when her mom was still alive, and a teenager, and it’s up to her to catch the killer and maybe prevent the deaths from ever happening. But as all great time travel movies have ever reminded us, it’s just never that easy.
Kiernan Shirpka is fun in the main role, and it’s still crazy to watch her on Mad Men, and think of how much she’s grown up in such a little time. But, yes, she handles this genre quite well. The film is not really scary, but does play mostly like a typical slasher film, just with some comedy thrown in. I wasn’t expecting anything from this, and then I felt bad that this was a streaming only release. As much as I love having immediate access, this should have had the opportunity to reach far and wide.
The audio description here is good too as this isn’t an intentionally gory or the kind of movie you’d expect it to be.
Amazon gave a nice update to the same.
