This is a new category for me. Of course, I would love it if everyone subscribed to my own YouTube (@macthemovieguy or YouTube.com/macthemovieguy), and consider me as your personal favorite critic. But I spend quite a bit of time on movie related YouTube channels, and listening to other critics discuss film. Many of these critics are highly entertaining, and if you are looking to subscribe to someone else in addition to me, this is my very first list. I always ask for people to subscribe to me, but I put my money where my mouth is, and I give others props. I subscribe personally to over 200 movie YouTubers, discussing various topics, and I’ve partnered on several occasions with two blind film critics, Alex and lee from The Dark Room podcast. These are all YouTube critics for now, so I left Alex and lee off, but I strongly suggest you check out The Dark Room wherever you podcast.
And now, the best of 2023.
1) Adam Does Movies
Honestly, I disagree with him on the regular, but even when I disagree with his stance on a film, his reasonings always come across in this really unique fashion that only he can put out. He’s easily the most entertaining on YouTube, with reviews, rants, roasts, and an unapologetic take on cinema that challenges people to click unsubscribe. He’s not the most famous or popular on this list, which makes his bold opinions even more respectable. he shares his awful theatre experiences with people talking on phones, or interactions with trolls online who don’t like when he gives a negative review. His material is well produced, and I’ve seen him partner many times with other YouTubers who may or may not appear on this list. Check him out.
2) Chris Stuckman
Probably the most well known on YouTube, I’ve been watching him for years,, even pre-blindness. His early videos didn’t have any production value, but with time, he has developed his channel into one that actually has trending videos, and over 2 million subscribers. Most notably, his film Shelby Oaks, is slated for release in 2024 after having an amazing crowd funding campaign. A few years back, Chris stopped doing negative reviews, and now only focuses on films he enjoyed. he’ll still critique if they have a few problems, but mostly his channel is now one of appreciation for the form and all that people put into it.He produces what he calls a Halloween special every year, which leads to him reviewing some of his favorite horror movies, and he always has a Best of list that is sure to come out soon.
3) Breakfast All Day
I really used to love these two back when they used to be three. This is the channel formerly known as What The Flick, but they lost the rights to that channel and its name, and fullly rebuilt this new brand, and they just broke 25K subscribers this year. Now it’s just two of them, and Ben went off somewhere… to parts unknown. but they offer excellent critiques. Alonso alone has some truly terrific things to say, and is clearly well versed in his knowledge of film. They do a pretty good job of producing content, and should keep your inbox happy.
4) Brian Rowe (aka The Awards Contender)
Rowe is now more focused on Oscar bait videos, but some of them are truly great. He spends a lot of time putting together arguments as to why a certain person has never won an Oscar, or which nominations he would swap out in any given year. He does watch current film, and mentions them, as well as making predictions about Awards season. His content is just really getting more and more interesting, and the rebrand into The Awards contender has only helped.
5) Jeremy Jahns
I do believe he is the second most subscribed critic on YouTube, and he’s got his own specific ratings system. You want that Awesometacular rating. I also have been watching him since before I lost my sight, and he always wore a black sport coat, in every video. if he’s wearing the same jacket, I do hope he’s had it dry cleaned. Interestingly, I’ve seen both Stuckman and jahns compete in the Ultimate Schmoedown on another channel, which is highly entertaining, so I know he knows his stuff about film.
6) Perri Nemiroff
Perry is great about doing live chats, and she’s also the host of For Your Consideration, which is a rather long running Oscar prediction series that she has been doing with Jeff Snyder and Scott Mantz for years. Perri loves her horror films, and she’s very passionate about her picks. She’s entertaining to watch by herself, or with her FYC team.
7) Luke Hearfield
this Brit got on my radar just this year by attending those European film festivals, and having a bunch of early reviews. but, his take on cinema is really well done, he’s entertaining (even when sick as a dog), and I’ve seen him featured on other channels. he does awards commentary as well, but he really just has a great voice to listen to, and his pacing is nice and he doesn’t feel over edited. A lot of channels feel so choppy, but Luke feels like he’s doing it all in one take (like me).
8) The Film Drunk
Aside from his Past Lives review this year, which was a bit much, I really enjoy his reviews as well. He reviews most major releases. A bit of humor, but what works for him.
9) The Oscar Expert
The Oscar Expert and Brother Bro are not just an Oscar channel, though that is a lot of what they do. They also cover festival films, including often smaller titles that the bigger critics don’t waste their time on. However, you are far less likely to catch blockbusters on their channel as a trade off. Sure, they may go out for an Oppenheimer, but don’t look for a review of the newest Transformers movie. Sometimes, their bickering is a bit much for me, but they also review films way before everyone else, like they somehow have access to films, and they have no problem ignoring review embargos. They might be the only critic on my 200+ channel list to review a small title.
10) Movies and Munchies
He reviews things with couches. His reviews are so well thought out i swear he’s using a teleprompter. Probably more so than anyone else I’ve named, he really feels like he’s reading from a script, but what he has to say is often clear and concise. He’d be great if critics were still on television. I could see him being the film critic for GMA or something like that.
Honorable Mentions:
11) Zach Pope
12) Cody Leach
13) Killjoy Jake
14) good Bad Flicks
15) Austin Burke
16) Just My Opinion Reviews
17) Blaine Auld
He is really low on subs, but his content is really well edited and he reviews a lot of titles on streamers that no one else reviews.)
18) Justin Watches Movies
19) The Flick Pick
20) Sydney Volpe
That’s it for this year. I’m going to try and watch an even broader spectrum of points of views, especially from some of the other channels that don’t land as frequently in front of my face, but I’d recommend any of these 20, and they all have varying levels of subscriber counts. To all twenty of you, thanks for a great 2023.
