The Hill

Sadly, Netflix did not have an available audio description track for this at the time of my viewing, so this inspirational Dennis Quaid baseball drama is going to get the grade it gets. In general, 2023 produced a few well made faith based films that had some money thrown behind them. I’ve seen a lot of sub par ones like Kirk Cameron’s Saving Christmas that seem like they are barely films. The hill tells the true story of a kid who is born with skeletal problems, and spends his time in a brace. He loves baseball, and he wants to prove to everyone that he can hit as well as the rest of them.

But, he has to follow his Pastor father (Quaid) around, along with the rest of his family. Obviously, he continues to train, and eventually gets his shot otherwise why would we make this movie? But, the truth is Ricky hill didn’t make a massive impact on baseball, which is why you likely didn’t know his name. but, he did prove that he’s something special. Dennis Quaid actually does some nice work here, as a father who preaches about miracles, but refuses to see the miracle in his son.

The problem is, that sports works for blind people because almost always there is an announcer of some kind who makes the game interesting, and offers play by play commentary. Here, there are a lot of sports centric moments that lack that, which means that any tension or drama that could ramp up in those moments is lost. What’s more problematic, is that I’m aware that there was a track made for this film, Netflix just didn’t acquire it when they debuted this film.

I have a feeling I’d recommend this if you could catch it with audio description.
