Not really a new show, but I did dive into the second season of Loot (Apple plus). The series is hilarious, and the first part where she’s being interviewed and asked those questions was hilarious. Loved it. I’m not just a Maya Rudolph fan, but I love what MJ Rodriguez brings to the table as well. It’s got that battle of being a sitcom, and I’m convinced Apple has kidnapped Tansy Alexander at this point because I think she’s narrating the whole lineup now or something, but this tries to do the most with the time it has. there are some descriptions of locations, and movements. There just isn’t a lot of time to get a lot of description in. Middle/Top Tier though.
I knocked out the second episode of Ripley (Netflix), honestly because I was considering recapping it on my YouTube channel. however, it’s just not interesting enough episode-to-episode. I would have just talked about Dickie’s under reaction to seeing Tom wearing his clothes and pretending to be him. If I walked in on one of my friends doing that, I’d find a way to get them out of the house, and gone. It’s weird. Even if you’re attracted to someone, you don’t start pretending to be them. Sure, you might wear an article of their clothing, but you aren’t practicing to become them. Run, dude. We’ve seen the ending to your story in a movie. Run. The audio description is fine. Again, we’re in this beautiful locale, and Dickie is filthy rich. Lean in on that. That’s how you immerse the audience. Middle/Top tier.
Shogun (Hulu) tragically has well written audio description that is very descriptive, but also has one guy doing all of it. I can literally run more than one voice on my phone for Siri, but I can’t get a second voice for this show. (I can set a separate version of Siri to read voiceover, while another reads what Siri would read). The sixth episode saw an increase in tensions, mounting wars, and mounting… other things. I like this series a lot, but hearing a delicate character like Kiko being voiced by a dude with a deep voice does take me out of the experience. Middle/Bottom tier.
And while I usually don’t mention my non audio described programs, I will today. It was great hearing all those celebrity cameos on this weeks SNL for Kristin Wiig’s fifth time hosting. I didn’t even know Ryan Gosling was there until she thanked him in the closing. that’s why this show needs audio description, and why I’m mentioning it.
Also, I’ve been listening to Top Chef (Peacock), and this guy with Kennedy’s disease needs to win. I can’t get invested in anyone else. I think his name is Rob. He won the elimination challenge this week, I believe, which now means you can’t be eliminated the following week.
And lastly, I watched *that* episode of Quiet On Set (MAX). How a show is getting this much attention and MAX doesn’t have audio description on it to read the text on screen is beyond me. Try watching this episode, and then watching Drake and Josh. I bet you can’t.
