For the last couple of years, there has been a change in comedy, and it has left a lot of people wondering what is funny, what can be funny, and people like Jerry Seinfeld looking for answers. the truth is, comedy is doing just fine for those who know how to do it. Much like everything else, it’s always straight white men who are grappling with how to make comedies that appeal to straight white men, without being cancelled or attacked on social media for being offensive. Most of the raunchy R rated comedies you probably like have something we now recognize as problematic. Well, prom Dates takes the trend of making things from the female perspective, and even partially LGBT, and somehow makes the same raunchy gross out humor that populated bro comedies twenty years ago. They aren’t the first ones to do this. Last year, Dicks and Bottoms (lol) both went hard on raunchy humor. So comedy isn’t dead, it just has a fresh perspective.
Prom Dates centers around two best friends who are, well, needing prom dates. Starting out the film as two straight best friends, one of them realizes she’s a lesbian and her extremely clingy boyfriend isn’t working for her anymore, and the other has a boyfriend who cheated on her, so they need new dates… fast.
They go on a journey, full of bodily fluids, bizarre jokes, and crazy side characters, and eventually come to the conclusion about how to spend their prom. It’s funny, and it feels like it could have shared the space with American Pie 25 years ago. The audio description here does a good job of making sure you can be revolted by the vomit, and the blood, and the… whatever.
I’m mostly on board with most of the film, but there are some things that just don’t line up. Like, i remember when a character is covered in vomit and hasn’t changed, or showered, so some scenes are hard to take. And while the talking dog joke is funny, they characters also directly address the problem with it, like why the dog would have certain word choices to begin with.
prom Dates has a solid chance of being on my best of the year list, because not all my favorite films are technically perfect, but I had a blast with this. The audio description, I didn’t get the information, sounded like it was maybe Adrienne Barbeau, or possibly Tansy Alexander. It’s nice work either way.
I know it feels like streaming originals always suck, but this one bucks the trend, at least for me.
