Always: 35th Anniversary

Always: 35th Anniversary- The Often Never Mentioned Steven Spielberg Film

Quick Take: When tackling movies with audio descriptions that were in an anniversary year, I took this opportunity to get one film closer to having seen Spielberg’s entire filmography. I’m really close now, and basically the remaining ones are films people try to ignore. I’ve seen all his heavy hitters. Always is definitely at the bottom of his list, or near it, depending on your taste, which is sad because it is also the final film for Audrey Hepburn. For that reason alone, I enjoyed it. She doesn’t have a lot to do. Most of this is Richard Dreyfuss playing a ghost who helps a new recruit for the job that he just died performing, and keeping this new kid alive, and watching him develop a relationship with the girl he left behind (Holly Hunter). Nothing really remarkable here. It is odd that Spielberg has this on his resume, after already notching Jaws and ET, but before Jurassic Park and Schindler’s List. I’d love to know what he thinks about this film, in terms of his larger filmography. Is there anything he would have done differently? As with most anniversary releases, the question becomes did this stand the test of time? Not really. The only people truly interested in this are those trying to see every Spielberg film. And for that, and because he is that prolific, it will always have some small profile. For more, check out my video.
