Piece By Piece- Pharrell Plays With LEGO’s

quick Take: Piece by piece, brick by brick, putting it together. Sorry, my Sondheim got away from me. I managed to catch this Pharrell Williams documentary back during the consideration frame, but I think most people weren’t grabbed by the gimmick, and left it alone. The film is a documentary, but is shot using LEGO’s, so everyone appears as a LEGO figure. At the heart, it is a celebration of Pharrell and his music, but done in such a way that if he ever got a parking ticket you wouldn’t know. There’s so much love for him in this that he seems undeniable. It just keeps me from thinking this will be the definitive work of his legacy. However, as cool as the gimmick sounds, it really doesn’t translate into the audio description. I did want the track to make more use of the medium, but the audio description only sparsely references anything visually that is specific to just having a film full of LEGO imagery. I love the little bricks because they are tactile, and everyone can enjoy them. You don’t necessarily need to know the color, or even the intended build, you can let your imagination run wild. That is what the LEGo features had done in the past (I don’t know why we stopped making LEGO features), and this likely has that same visually imaginative spirit. I just wish the audio description could capture that feeling. For more, check out my video.
