The Small Screen Diaries- 04/09/25

TV Shows Watched: Daredevil: Born Again- S1E8 (Disney Plus) with audio description, The Handmaid’s Tale: S6E2 (Hulu) with audio description, Midcentury Modern: S1E2 (Hulu) with audio description, Survival Of The Thickest: S2E3 (Netflix) with audio description, The Righteous Gemstones: S4E5 (MAX) with audio description, The Daily Show: Mon (Paramount Plus) no audio description, and The Rookie: S7E14 (Hulu) with audio description

Best Episode: The Handmaid’s Tale- I mean, we’re just on a completely new level when Handmaid’s Tale returns. We are continuing to explore June, the person who returned, and their dynamic. As well as the whole New Bethlehem thing, and seeing other returning characters who were not in the season premiere.

Runner Ups: Midcentury Modern and The Righteous Gemstones- I am certainly known for loving me some Gemstones. And, this week was certainly no exception, with the absurdity of the dropping of the yellow handkerchief or BJ’s new helper, but Midcentury Modern is so well cast, and so clever, it is quickly becoming a favorite of mine.

Best Audio Description: Daredevil: Born Again- the action series had a couple of spoiler-laden moments where it truly did shine. one of them involved the creative use of a tooth, another involved a dance, and I even enjoyed the persistent reminder of a certain blood stain.

Runner Up: The Handmaid’s Tale- While it didn’t quite have the big moment of the premiere, it did continue to build an intense story, and the audio description supports the choices made by the actors.

Best Performance: The Ensemble Of Mid-Century Modern- After recognizing Matt Bomer individually, it is important to recognize that the main 4 cast members work really well off each other. Linda Lavin will definitely be missed when no longer on the show. I feel like I’m watching the second season of 8 Simple Rules and I just keep waiting for the shoe to drop.

Runner Ups: Charlie Cox (Daredevil: Born Again), Elizabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale), and Danny McBride (The Righteous Gemstones)- Three cast members who are incredibly reliable and really drive their shows, even if their shows all have strong supporting cast members. they were all reliably excellent.

Best Moment Of Audio Description- Tooth Extraction (Daredevil Born Again)- There’s a whole scene based around this. It is really dipped heavily in spoiler territory, so this is more of an acknowledgement of the scene, for anyone who may have worked on it. The scene was great because of the specifics, the little details that made it into the track that made everything make sense.

Runner Up: the Things They Did Right (The Rookie)- This show doesn’t always get excellent audio description, so I wanted to make sure that I pointed out the few moments of greatness. This episode had billboards, totally visual elements, that were important to the story. We also had the mention of one of the officers disabling a vehicle, which became important. Then, there was that fight between Sean Penn. I mean, Penn and Sean. A fun accidental selection of names to have in a fight scene, but since it ended up being an underwater fight, it became more than just a gimmick, and an actual scene that was well described.

Worst Of…- I didn’t hate anything. I liked Survival Of The thickest, but not enough for it to win any specific mentions. And, I love The Daily Show on Mondays, so that was fine, even though it didn’t have audio description. it would be amazing if it did, but I think Paramount has weighed the cost of doing nearly live audio description that would port to Paramount the next day, for a current events program that likely doesn’t get a lot of rewatches of old episodes.

Say Something!
