Pets- Disney Plus is in the content creation business, and Bryce Dallas Howard is in the business of padding her directing portfolio. Of course, she has a long way to go before she can reach her dad’s level, and Pets won’t get her there. this does have audio description, but the whole thing is going to be underwhelming for a blind/low-vision audience regardless. It is shot like a talking head format, with interview to interview, despite the obvious draw being the animals. As a blind audience, we likely want to see cute puppies and kittens, or cool pet owls, but the description never has any time to be more than cursory, and the direction from Howard isn’t interested in discovering a great truth. last year, a documentary fell under the radar called American Cats, which was really about the anti-declaw movement. That way you could appreciate an animal, and also know why the thing you are watching exists. For a sighted audience, there’s some slight draw of this being passively entertaining and non-offensive, and full of cute furry beings. But for blind audiences, I just don’t know what you would get out of it. I’m leaning slightly positive, because I think if you can see a little, you might be able to be entertained by furry and blurry little creatures, but this is rather pointless. I wish Howard had structured it better, to breakdown all the typical pets, and maybe the pros and cons of owning them. She basically found some people who owned animals and interviewed them. I’m sure there are more exciting stories to be told.
